Measures also being put in place to allow Ukrainians in Canada to extend their stay

Fraser (Canada's minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship) said his department has already approved more than 1,800 Ukrainian immigration applications on a priority basis. "We will be looking to do more,"
When I was growing up, I remember Ukrainian was the most spoken language in Manitoba, after English and French.

I have ancestors that left Ukraine right around the time Lenin came into power. I have to agree, it got under my skin watching the headlines last night, left me feeling very unsettled.
I know the prairies and Western Canada had big waves of Ukrainian immigration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Something that's piqued my curiosity but I've never really delved into to learn more about.
Ordinary Ukrainian citizens don't have two hyrivnia to rub together. They are not able to buy a ticket to Canada, not even close, let alone for their children too.
One of my cousins there has had the same car for 30 years already because they cannot buy another. The type of jobs available in Ukraine are low paying and unstable. Many Ukes leave their cities to work in other countries. They are a very young county and trying to develop it.
A woman I know who moved here from Russia over 30 years ago. She and her husband are in Cuba on holiday. Her husband thought it would be nice to have her nephew and his young child join them. They are from the Ukraine. So they are in Cuba now.
The nephew has had a bit of bad luck. First wife died, second wife mentally ill and in an institution .
So I'm wondering what they are going to do.
I certainly don't think it's a good idea to return to the Ukraine now.
I'm guessing they may arrange for him to come here, directly from Cuba...but not sure how that will play out when he arrives.
I wonder if the language filter is preventing it from working. If so, the Guardian main page has a story on an island off of Crimea. 13 Ukrainian border guards were told to surrender by a Russian war ship. Their response, which was recorded, wax "Russian warship. F you." They all died.
ETA: Just tried the new link and it doesn't work either, so I think it is the language filter taking out the f word.
