In Dutch media the following article was posted a few days ago which claims Canada wants 1.5 million immigrants to move to Canada until 2025 with ‘skilled worker shortage’ as the reason. Really?

Wouldn’t Canada, just like Western European countries like Germany and the Netherlands where the housing markets, health care systems, schools and social systems are severely struggling at the moment because of the population growth from immigration, face similar problems?

For example Canadian housing, which is already terribly overpriced at the moment would get even more expensive.

So it isn't just the half million immigrants per year coming in - it is also all the students coming in on top of that. Yes Canada is the fastest growing country in the G7 at 2X the rate of the U.S and one of the fastest growing countries in the world. Problem is, we don't have the infrastructure and supports in place for all these people.

The reality is that even though we need oodles more housing being built - housing starts and construction have slowed since 2022 when interest rates started going bonkers.

I know a few students in my city and they are having a hard time finding part time jobs to fund their schooling. There are soooo many students who have come in in such a short time no labour market could fill them. So long term - yes countries like Canada need students and immigrants - that there is no doubt about. If we did away with those the population would actually decrease over time and so would the economy. On the other hand - you can't keep bringing them in in such numbers without looking at what is going on - on the ground with all these people and right now -Canada just can't accommodate them in such large numbers. We need to throttle back until we can properly manage supply and demand.

In terms of the article - I disagree that all political parties are in agreement about immigration levels.

If you count everyone newly coming in to Canada from abroad in 2023 (immigrants, refugees, temporary workers, foreign students, etc.), we'll be close to 1.5 million in total for 2023.

I don't believe anyone is really talking seriously about reducing the inflow for 2024, in spite of lots of rumblings under the surface about it.

No problem. Send a few buses down to Texas and we will fill them up with immigrants for you. All you could possibly want. Millions if you want that many.

The new immigration levels plan 2024–2026 for Canada is set to be announced on Wednesday. It will outline annual targets for the next 3 years.

No party with any chance of taking power in Canada is really proposing a reduction of the intake.

Even the opposition Conservatives who are far ahead in the polls aren't saying much about immigration.

not much but this is what poilevre said

Quote:
Poilievre slammed the Liberal target as driven by Trudeau’s “ideology,” but he did not answer repeated questions about whether he would consider reducing the number.
whether that'll translate to reductions though is hard to say but I imagine it would impact levels.

What about creating incentives to increase birth rate of the people already in Canada? Like with the simplest change in the tax code to encourage stay home moms. Racist, I know. Not progressive. Moms? What's that? What are their pronouns?

What race do you think Canadians are?

According to the 2021 Census, 23% of Canadians are foreign born - much higher than the U.S. (14%).

You are correct to point out that Canada's population is multi-racial, but it's also true that in Canada the immigration debate is generally framed as such:

Anything that's remotely pro-immigration = non-racist

Anything that's not sufficiently pro-immigration = racist
