I came out of Target today and my car had a dent in it and was missing paint. No note on my car and Target has no security footage. I really want to get this fixed but I'm afraid that if I report it to my insurance that they will raise my rates. I live in CA if it makes any difference. And if it matter I've been with the same insurance company (Geico) for 7 years without a single incident/claim. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

If it is a small dent they have shops that fix these dents for little expense without going thru insurance.

It's about 8" long above my driver side wheel well and it's dented in and missing all the paint. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too cheap.

I don't much like GEICO myself. They are cheap but have a reputaton for trying to weasel out of paying claims.

Look around, you will find a good independent shop that will fix and paint for a reasonable price. Particularly here on the West Coast, you will frequently get the best deal from a shop run by and manned by Mexican immigrants. There are a few of these shops around home, as far as I can tell (and I have done some body work and painted a few cars in my time) they do as good a work as the "big guys" but just charge less.

You didn't say what kind of car and if the dent is on a front fender or on a rear quarter panel. The front fender is somewhat easier to fix, or you might be better off getting a straight fender from a boneyard and going from there. It's usually possible to paint just the fender and have it turn out fine. Quarterpanel is harder, what you describe would have to fix the existing panel to be practical, and depending on the car, the color, the amount of fading, you may end up painting most of the quarter panel to get a decent match.
