what brought on the name "Ruby?"

Well, her name had been "Baby" which I did not care for really so I chose something that sounded sort of similiar so she would not get confused.

We underestimate cats' intelligence on that one, I think. But "Ruby" fits her nonetheless.

With her markings she reminds me of one of my first childhood felines. A babysitter, daughter of family friends, phoned a few months after our tuxedo kitten died and the drama had quieted. It seemed that a friend was going back to college or moving away or whatever, and couldn't take a young female tortie with her. The parents were refusing to keep the kitty - could we help? After a family conference we agreed. One night not long after that, the two young ladies arrived by car with "Mame" ready to be re-homed. Rather than run nervously about the place when turned loose from her carrier, Mame lay down on the living room rug while we kids converged on and petted her. My folks saw the girls off, and they drove away waving merrily. Then...Mom took one long look at Mame sprawled on the carpet and exclaimed, "THAT CAT'S PREGNANT!!!!"

Wow....perfect cliff-hanger for the "rest of the story". You've had such great experiences with cats in your life. Gonna start a new thread?
