my neighborhood, five points, is getting overrun with feral cats. the city directed me to the aspca or whatever to rent a trap. I only caught one, and the other ones are too smart to get into the trap. Unfortunately, they are now in my yard (fenced) and my house on occasion. What can I do?
If the city or county dont want to help then you'll have to rely on your own resources, a few phone calls to local pet shelters or adoption agencies may point you in the right direction, last resort? Exterminate
Does your town have any organisations that specialise in trapping ferals outside of the ASPCA? Have you tried the humane society or local privately run cat shelters? Maybe ask at a local vet or animal hospital.
These cats dont deserve to be EXTERMINATED!!!! They're just wild kitties...local animal shelter or animal control is your best bet. They actually have a program that catches these wild kitties, spays and neuters them, and releases them again.
Our shelter has a feral cat program where they will spay or neuter and rehab for adoption. Please don't exterminate, it's not the cats fault, they were probably dumped or their mothers were dumped.
Ask you local shelter, do research on the internet, as a cat vet. Find a feral rescue group.
Get your own traps. Smear some tuna fish onto the tray and put the trap(s) in a sheltered location. The cats will go in if they feel safe.
How are they getting into your home?
Are they in the attic?
a bowl of antifreeze will stop that.
What the hell is your problem? You're telling someone to poison the cats? To cause them a horrible death? To possibly poison their own cats and the cats and dogs in the neighborhood belonging to their neighbors? To maybe poison a neighborhood child?

I like house cats but feral cats are not tame nor do they take to house training very well.
Feral cats will also beat up and or kill your house cat and they kill numerous song birds
If someone's cats are in the house where they belong for their own safety, they will not get beaten up by ferals, run over by cars, attacked by dogs and predators or get parasites. Nor will they be poisoned by some sadist in the neighborhood. Do you realize a person can be arrested and charged with manslaughter if some child or mentally deficient person gets into the poison.

Exterminate? Will you be there to pay for his/her lawyer when he's sued for killing their cats and dogs? Or when he's charged with manslaughter because a child get into the poison and died? How would you feel if it's your child?

Thank you for saying what was on my mind. What a horror!
