Had Orion to the vet today and while I trust the vet I'm still concerned. He said that there doesn't seem to be any inflammation or issues where he had extractions so he didn't give him an antibiotic. He said it could be herpes. We're doing a 'wait-and-see.'

I'm concerned because Orion has always had issues. When he got ear mites he developed an ear infection. Topical flea meds give him huge blisters on his face and neck. He is quite sensitive. I'm unsure is he is a pedigree since I adopted him from a shelter. He is odd, his back legs do not align with the front. When he sits they are on either side of his front paws, you can clearly see his belly and he sometimes stretches them out behind him when he lays on his stomach. I've never seen a cat do that before so imagine his hips are deformed. I suspect he may be a rejected pedigree or an over bred one and that may be part of the reason he's so susceptible to things.

He's eating and drinking normally, he hasn't lost weight - he weighs 14 pounds. He's acting normal as well, yelling at the puppy when he squeaks his toys too much =) But I am still a little concerned and wonder if anyone else has had this issue and if so what if anything can be done at home? Orion eats both canned and dry food - if I don't offer dry food he'll eat the dogs' food and the silly dog will let him!

How long has his lip been swollen? Various parts of Bobbles' face used to swell up after being in the basement. We suspect she as getting bitten by spiders. It hasn't happened lately so we think she is becoming a better spider hunter.

Both of our girls and our dog do that all the time and they seem to be quite comfortable. The cats (girls) come from different backgrounds and parents and I doubt they both have deformities.

I don't have much input on the swollen lip. I would assume he was either bitten by a spider or somehow maybe scratched it doing something rather than an indicator for herpes. Usually they would have sores/ulcers inside the mouth. Calicivirus is another thing to look at. It can cause ulcers/sores on/in the mouth (tongue, lips etc). It also cause respiratory infections like herpes.

As for possibly having herpes I wouldn't worry too much about that. Most of mine (probably all) have it and it is quite common especially if you have a cat from a colony or from a shelter. You have to just watch for secondary infections and make sure if they do have flare ups that they are eating, are hydrated and that you get appropriate meds if need be. Using Lysine is also good to maintain their condition and reducing stress is important to minimize flare ups.

You made me laugh about the way Orion sits and lays! Most of mine do that. I was worried too at first but after googling it I found that many others do it too. Could be something with their hips but I don't worry about it anymore.

Hope Orion gets better soon!

Thanks everyone. He is acting quite normal, he was yelling at me all evening to feed him as I cleaned today. I hadn't considered a bug bite, it's quite possible living here in FL. He once was stung by something and his foreleg swelled from his paw to his elbow. He didn't swat at anything that flew for years after, he's a smart kitty.

He drinks a lot as long as his fountain is operational. I used to have to turn on the tap in the bathroom sink but finally found a setup that meets with his exacting standards. A glass bowl with an aerator. I'm considering a stainless fountain because they can be kept clean and won't break although when we lived in the country they all drank from the outside one after the hurricanes. I guess it's cat logic.
