My 15 year old red tabby had very bad breath so he went to the vet and had 3 teeth pulled. He came home and was fine. Then, he started drooling, his cheek is puffed out like its swollen, and his little tongue keeps sticking out all the time. He is only puffy on the side where the teeth were pulled.

The vet put him on antibiotics, but it hasn't helped. He is eating, drinking and seems to still enjoy his life but the vet does not know what is wrong and seems to think it might be a tumor. She flushed out the back of his mouth and says we would need to do x rays, biopsy, etc etc. to further diagnose it. I feel so bad for him, cause his bib area is always wet.

Has anyone had anything like this, and if so, what did you do?

Poor baby. I don't have any advice on what it could be. I would think it would have to do with pulling those teeth, an infection or something. Maybe its a reaction to the anesthesia? If your vet can't figure it out, I'd get a second opinion.
I sure hope your boy feels better soon!

How long has it been? If it is an infection, it might take a few days for the antibiotics to kick in.

don't know if this is relevant or not.... but i recently transported a tiny dog who was missing her teeth .... her tongue hung out the side of her mouth and she drooled CONSTANTLY.... so maybe the missing teeth have something to do with the drooling.

have no idea about the swelling though.... other than an infection .... maybe give the antibiotics a couple of days to kick in.....

I think x-rays are a great start. If you like your vet, give her a chance to do some diagnostics.

Thank you everyone. The vet had another idea about switching the antibiotic to something that is "compounded". The x rays would require more anesthesia and I hate to put my cat thru it again. He doesn't seem to be unhappy, withdrawn, in pain, etc. so if its a tumor, I might just leave it alone and see what happens. He eats ok. Afterall, he is old and I want him to have a good life without alot of trauma in his later years. If its malignant, I think i would have seen some other changes in him, but I haven't (yet). We will see what the new antibiotic does...

Years ago, my 20 year old cat, Sammie, developed terrible bad breath and then a few of her teeth fell out. I was completely freaked out to find a huge cat tooth on my pillow, right next to my face, when I woke up one morning. Also, her cheek had puffed out to the size of a walnut.

It turned out to be a tumor and with her age and all, I decided to let her go. At age 20 she had had a full life and I didn't want her to suffer any more.

Sending good thoughts to you and your kitty.

Our vet doesn't put them in sleepland to do xrays.

At the thread's title, I thought it might be a beesting or spider bite.

Best wishes for your kit, I feel badly for you and your sick kitty.
