16 is an old cat. She knows what's coming and saying good bye. Enjoy what's left.

I thought my cat was dying a few months ago. She continues to rally. I continue to monitor all her food, water and medicine and it does make a difference. Don't give up until it is really over.

But now I've changed her diet to wet food. She's not eating much anymore, has gotten vocal again and walking around aimlessly. Also, she went to the bathroom OUTSIDE of her box (#2), and threw up a couple times.

I'm beginning to think she's in the beginning stages of....dementia?
It could be a UTI or kidney disease. UTIs are diagnosed through a urine sample and kidney disease can still be present even with normal labs. I would buy a can of wet food from a prescription diet for kidney disease and see how she responds to it. If she scarfs it down, you have your answer.

That's what I thought with River. She was in rough shape, at a couple of points would only eat tuna (magic elixir for cats) but since has gone back to cat food food. She also reverted to the behavior she had when we got her, peeing on the rugs. I put down some potty pads and she uses her box and the pp pads now. My last vet said he thought she had bone cancer but had not X-rayed her. I was always told most cats die of kidney or cancer. From her drinking and peeing I'd guess her kidneys are going but I haven't gotten her in to a second vet opinion. I'm rather miffed that previous doc did not X-ray to confirm or deny bone cancer. Her labs showed anemia according to a friend who has run a blood lab for 20 years.

She's awfully skinny, under 5 pounds down from nine or 10 at her max. She now has a hearty appetite, she loves it when I go in to snuggle and scrunch her and she occasionally comes into the den to sit next to me or on my lap.

I need to get her in for a nail clip, she's so fragile I hate to traumatize her but her nails are too long now. She may have had a mini-stroke or two, or maybe it's just extreme old age or maybe some mild kitty dementia. But she's still operating, she uses her box most of the time, she seems to get some pleasure out of life. I'm pretty sure a vet would have said put her down one month, two months, or three months ago but she's still here.

Yeah, I think you need to follow her lead on when she's done. I won't keep mine alive if they are totally miserable because I don't want them suffering unnecessarily. Mr. Bugs let me know when he was done (along with his blood work). He was just screaming in pain (and this was before Gabapentin was determined to be a good option). He was mostly alive with the really old vet I had that always told me cats can't have pain meds. I finally switched vets, but, they did not bring up Gabapentin to me until a couple years ago. It can be safely used long term. Mr. Bugs did not even have a month to live; so, it was pretty much a no brainer.

I do my cat's nails. Since I have the Gabapentin I use that plus a thunder shirt. I did have the vet do it during the last exam (used to be about $12-$15 and now $33). Um, NOPE! But, it's very important because they can get very injured if it snags on something. It's a big deal. Plus just getting her to eat and drink. Poor thing.

Sounds like her kidneys. Elvis is Stage 4 and is being given weekly Darbapoetin to treat CKD-induced anemia.
