Never having been to Atlanta, I am not keen to go there, especially with a dog, seeing how big it is.
Someone mentioned Columbia wouldn't be far enough inland.
Could people provide some alternatives, then? Irmo? Greenville, SC? Athens, GA?
You really don't have to go that far. Hurricanes can cause havoc inland as well. Hugo did a deal on Charlotte. Going all the way to Athens, Atlanta, or Greenville to escape it is kind of ridiculous if you don't have family.
For one, Matthew isn't likely to be a direct hit. And two, if it did, Greenville and Athens could still feel it too. Hurricanes don't immediately lose all their power once they go over land. Back in 04, Frances left Asheville without water for days, and Asheville is over 400 miles from the Florida Panhandle. Frances also produced tornadoes in Virginia and closed 20 airports, majority of them inland.
Going far inland will protect you from the storm surge, but that doesn't eliminate the wind, flooding, and tornado risk. Just try to get away from the surge and that low-lying coastal flooding. You don't have to retreat to the foothills.
But again, with Matthew's current path, it looks Charleston is the pins with Matthew riding the gutter, rather than Charleston being the pins and Matthew being the bowling ball coming in for a strike.
Greenville may work. As fate would have it, I'm going to Asheville tomorrow. Thursday night prices are good. Friday and Saturday are crazy. It's fall colors season and prices go crazy.
Try Air BNB.....and when attempting to book at hotels, ask for discounted rates, explaining that you are fleeing the hurricane. Some front desk Managers have discretion. Stay safe.......we have a small shack on the beach as a get away and I'm sweating it from a financial perspective but the risk to human and pet lives is by far the greatest concern for all of us. I'm sure hoping this thing barely skims us........

macalan, I was more in reference to getting away and still be able to do stuff. That's why I suggested Atlanta.
For all other info, listen to the experts. I just heard some moron in Taco Bell tell some Ohio tourists that it was windy today because of the hurricane.
People should relax , it will not arrive in Charleston (if it even does) Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. So there is no need to panic, and it is ridiculous to close schools tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a very nice day like today. Also, if it does come to Charleston, it will likely drop to a CAT 2 , which is no reason to even leave....Panic for nothing, and the media loves to have something to stir up. People enjoy the next couple days as normal.
Newsflash: Charleston Southern University is suspending all activities at 5 PM today.

Why would anyone do anything before Friday?
It is plain stupidity to do anything before Thursday evening. It is possible that the hurricane will not even come here, and it will only be a CAT 2 if it does.
