I have been reading the moving to charlotte forums and unable to shortlist which areas or zipcodes to look for home/townhome rental plus good schooling. I hope someone can help me re-emphazise city names and zipcodes, or areas.

We are a family of 4. The kids are 7 and 2. Definitely high rated public school, elementary school is important. low crime safe neighbourhoods is a priority. We come from midwest[ mpls/st paul suburb close to the twin cities]. We already have a job lined up and it will most likely be in zipcodes 28202 or 28262. Around 30 minute commute is perhaps okay and we are not picky on commute as the job allows to work from home partially. We would be renting a 2 bed 2 bath town home/condo/house.

Which zipcodes or places should I concentrate on that has high performing elementary schools, reasonable rents ~800-1200ish , safe and low crime rate and specifically midscale-upscale neighbourhoods.

I would appreciate your speedy advice since I would like my son to not miss school start and I hope to come doen for househunting week of july 26 next week, so we can move around aug 20 2010

I'm not sure the city names of those zip codes you posted. I would try to stay away from most of the Mecklenburg county schools as they have alot of problems (though what school systems don't). There is a website you can go to find the ranking of the schools around and I would definitely utilize that.

You could try around Huntersville (Birkdale is a nice shopping area), Cornelius, Ballantyne, Mooresville and Concord. They are all nice areas and two different counties. Meck & Cabarrus.

Don't want much do you! Your list pretty much matched up with ours when we moved here. We ended up looking in Cabarrus near Huntersville and all along the south eastern part of Cabarrus along Rocky River Road. Either could be a good commute for 28262 depending on specific locations. I don't know about downtown travels.

Good luck!

I've lived in 28262 for 5 years and love the Mallard Creek area.

Good luck!

So your job location is either uptown Charlotte or the northeast going toward the Concord area?

In that case, I'd suggest you look in the Mallard Creek area. One really nice neighborhood with a variety of homes, including townhomes, is Highland Creek.

I hope you are working with a realtor - you have a lot of ground to cover in between those two zip codes and you don't want to miss the best places

90210?

J/K! I would focus on specific neighborhoods, rather than specific ZIP codes, personally.

Thanks for your replies. Most rental websites take city name or zipcodes and since we worked our list based on good schools, we had to be specific to the zip codes to co-relate the schools and the properties. Well..... We arrived and took a look at the Ballantyne area. Forgive me if I sound too weird, but quite honestly the so-called posh Ballantyne area looked like the average city I would associate with back in the Minnesota(Mpls/St. Paul). I realize , in Ballantyne, the homes are beautiful and newer but the entire setup and city is something my eyes are perhaps used to as average. There are some real upscale neighbourhoods, where I come from or may be I am doing the wrong comparison with Twin cities being a long well developed city in terms of infrastructure and business, while Ballantyne is just propping up.

I am planning to go up to Huntersville tomorrow- but I am guessing it will have an even more suburban atmosphere. Dont ask me why I am moving if I like Twin Cities then... well we all know the number one reason why people move from MN.... I look forward for your comment, and please note I just shared my thougts and didnt mean to be criticising...

Zipcodes in this area can cover a lot of places so in most cases you can't just go by that.

I think your impression is correct. Ballantyne is relatively new area of Charlotte, not a separate city like Huntersville. A large part of the "Ballantyne area" did not exist a few decades ago. It is very nice but outside of the country club, I don't recall it being thought of as posh.
