I honestly could see Cherokee though. I also see Cleveland and Lancaster remaining CSA. Although Lancaster becoming MSA wouldn't surprise me. Another development I could see happening is Charlotte and Hickory combining to form a CSA.
I know people who live in northern Cherokee County (technically, Blacksburg). People in Blacksburg commute into Cleveland, Gaston, York, & Spartanburg. Adding Cleveland to the MSA could tip the balance. The map that I saw showed secondary commuting (I assume a small number) between Lincoln & Cleveland.

There has been a lot of construction work in Cleveland that has brought people in. I don't know if it's enough to up the commuting figures enough to tip the balance.

Right now the Charlotte MSA is connected to the Upstate by York & Cherokee. Cleveland would seal the deal by having it connected in both states. I've seen Union (SC) in the regional planning maps.

Maybe the map that I can't find was on a uncc site. There are maps of some sort that are down for maintenance. This is one of the links that I found http://ui.uncc.edu/story/commute-mec...ic-travel-time

It appears there is an IT issue. They have posted on their Facebook page about the issues. Perhaps in a few days it will be functioning. I also went to the MUMPO website and they also have announced the change in the boundaries and that the name will change. IMO, Concord's US should be added with Charlotte's, it's practically just a line where Charlotte's end and Concord's begin.

True, but they have the population to have their own subgroup. I do think that it's funny that people on here were hoping that it would be the Gastonia name that was dropped, but it didn't turn out that way.

It's hard to say if Cleveland will go in. If it does, it will tie to Gastonia. It will all break down to commuting.

GUAMPO hasn't changed a thing, but I suppose that it doesn't need to. Only Kings Mountain will be joining, as far as municipalities go.

If Gastonia & Kings Mountain are able to continue their reinventions, I don't think that the commuting question will be a problem in 2020.
