Hello,

Moving to Charlotte in the summer and wanted to know of any nice places to rent an apartment where my roommate and I will both have a somewhat decent commute (less than 35 mins). I'm working in Concord and my roommate will be working in Southpark. We would like a 2 BR apt that is below $1,200 a month. We were looking at the University Area but not quite sure if that's the best bet for us to stay. Not being from the area, we're not sure which areas would afford the best commute, or if there are any roads to make sure to avoid in deciding where to stay. To throw another wrinkle in this, we're both under 25 and single so being somewhat close to where some action is (Uptown the only place?) would be a big plus. Any suggestions or helpful advice?

Thanks!

From Uptown/South End, you'll definitely be within 35 minutes of Southpark but it will be a longer commute to Concord; however, it shouldn't take you 35 minutes unless you're pretty deep into Concord. If your job is near the interstate, I'd say your commute, with normal traffic, would be 20 minutes tops.

For a while, I worked in both South Charlotte as well as Concord (my job was in Concord and I freelanced in the afternoons all around CLT). So, like you two, I also needed a location that provided easy access to both spots. I ended up in the Mallard Creek area, which ended up being perfect. There are tons of affordable (and nice) apartment complexes there – I lived in a Colonial Grand off of Mallard Creek Church, and my apartment was really large, clean and less than $700 for a 1-br (this was in 2011). It was right over the Concord line, so you could get there through both the interstate and the back roads – same was true for CLT, as sometimes I took back roads to Uptown but more commonly used 85/77. Took me about 30 minutes in either direction.

You should look into it – it is likely an inexpensive, safe, and convenient option for you. Best of luck
