UNION COUNTY

Choices made for site of new library

The Union County library board selected its top choices this week for the site of a new super-regional library in southwest Union County.First choice was a parcel identified as the James property, four to 15 acres on the east side of Providence Road, across from Cureton Town Center.

Second choice was the Hunnicutt property, 3.7 to 5.6 acres on the west side of Providence Road across from Cuthbertson Road.

Two other sites were rejected.

The Jackson Station property on the east side of Providence Road at Waxhaw Parkway has a legally contentious easement running through its center.

A site at the planned NewTowne Gardens development, on the east side of Providence Road, would require the county to lease the building.

Can't wait for the new Union County Library! What a welcome addition to the community that will be. Can't imagine what that will do to the traffic on Providence Road. It's bad enough already.

Soccer Moms need reading material. Why go to Barnes & Noble or Borders or amazon.com, when you can ride down the road a bit and read for free! The libraries also offer programs and entertainment for kids ranging from toddlers thru teens. There is a certain satisfaction in sitting down and reading a book in your "hands" that can never be duplicated in reading from a computer screen! Encourage your children to read early and often! The library is a great place to get them started in their quests for a lifetime of learning!

My kids and I really enjoy going to the library. Just like TheEmissary stated, there's something really great about the "book-in-lap" experience of reading in a library.
IMO, holding a newspaper, magazine or book in your hands is just so much better than reading something off of the "cold" internet.

My son will read 10-15 books a week over the summer. He is reading Les Miserables just this weekend!! I can't afford to buy him as many books or tie up the computer for him reading that much. We (he) loves the library. They can order books he wants from anywhere in the state library system too!!

That property is beautiful with the house and white fence. Times are changing. I saw the for sale sign awhile back. Too bad they couldn't have integrated into the Cureton Town Center somehow along the south edge or maybe as part of Prescott's mixed use development. Sure hope they plan on road widening. With the expected opening of the new middle school and high school near by, I think everyone should count on seeing a stoplight at Cuthbertson and Providence road.

stmaarten - I would have said "lap" but even with my reading glasses, it's becoming a "stretch". To me, a library is one of the best uses of tax money ever to come along the pike!

U120 - Not everyone in Union County has high-speed internet access. The eastern part of Union County is very agrarian and not well-suited for long runs of cable line. There are some places out there where even DSL is not available, because you must live with 15,000 ft of a switching station. Since all of the Union County libraries have high-speed access, it may be the only place for some residents to get online without tying up a phone endlessly!

As soon as they realign Cuthbertson to line up with Kensington and rename that road to Cureton Parkway there will be a light put in. Kensington will remain the name from Waxhaw Marvin toward SC.

Is that what you think will happen or what is scheduled to happen?
