I bought a bag of Vigoro fertilizer last week. However it says 29-0-5 on it. Is that far off from what's in your schedule for Spring?

Oh, and I have Kentucky Blue Grass.

Can I get a copy of this fertilizer schedule thing? I am in the same situation right now. New house but the builder seeded/strawed my yard and it didn't grow in well. I am thinking of either paying for sod or planting fescue.

You are going to waste most of your money planting fescue now. I personally would go with sod or wait until fall to do a really good overhaul.

I hate that fescue requires more maintenance and watering that the warm season grasses like st augustine, but I absolutely cannot stand the way it looks in the winter, it just looks, well depressing to me because it goes dormant. So I go with fescue, but I do have a small yard. Some of the new fescue varieties are a little more drought tolerant though.

I would go with fescue as it tends to do better in the southeast in the heat and humidity. It also stands up to traffic better. If you can wait, as someone pointed out, planting fescue now would be a waste of money. Fescue does better if planted in the fall. It allows enough time for the root system to set up. If you dont have the patience, go with sod or you have the option to overseed, but the summer heat may wipe out the new grass. My fiance is a landscaper.

Here is a good link for Do-It-Yourself lawns. Yes, this is for Scott's products (I don't work for Scott's), but it is the easiest one that I've seen and allows you to select your grass type/area. You don't need to use their products but lays out a good feeding schedule. Remember to aerate in the fall! SO IMPORTANT!

st augustine does not get a deep green color and is very hard to get to thicken up. NC is in the transitional zone so its tough to make a decision. Fescue does very poorly in the summer but a good grade of bermuda thrives in the summer. But bermuda goes dormant at first frost and does not waken up until the beginning of May so you have to make a decision. Your other choice is zoysia but i do not know enough about the grass to comment on it.
