Hello. I live in New York City and am considering a move to Charlotte. Of all things, what I am most interested in is how bikable/skatable the area is. I skate and bike the streets of NYC all the time and can easily bike or skate 60 or 70 miles in a day (meaning if I have the ability, NYC has the miles). In other words, I'm not looking for a park but rather open road. Also, how far is Charlotte from the mountains and is a car a necessity? Is there reliable public transportation?

Not enough open roads for skating or biking, however plenty of hidden greenways that extend for miles. You will need a car. Depending on what part of the mountains 1.5 to 2.5 hours from certain parts of Charlotte.

Cool skating

Hey! Thanks for your response. As you know, I skate in NYC so I'm accustomed to skating in traffic with lots of congestion so, technically, I'm not very familiar with open roads anyway I guess I'm just more curious as to whether or not I'll be arrested - ha!

There are bike commuters in Charlotte, so it is possible to live without a car. This is especially possible if you live in South End, Selwyn Ave. area, or the North Davidson district and work uptown. You'd be just a couple of miles from work, and there are grocery stores and conveniences in those neighborhoods.

You can live without a car in Charlotte.

Default bike commuting

Thank you so much! I'm also a bike commuter so I'm happy to hear that.

I disagree. I know people who get along fine without a car in Charlotte. They are bikers and bus riders. As another poster said, it will be easier however if you live relatively close to uptown. Look at areas like Chantilly, Elizabeth, Sedgefield, Cotswold, Plaza Midwood. These are older neighborhoods so the rentals will be older apartments or even duplexes, but you can't beat those locations. Best of luck!

I bike commute up in Asheville. I lived in Charlotte for a few years and was fortunate to find an apartment close enough to work that I walked every day.

Be aware that if you move to Charlotte you are entering a car culture. There are very few folks who would even consider living without a car. Public transit is in its infancy compared to NYC. But anyone who says you must own a car hasn't tried it. You can probably skate in Uptown, where the speed limits are lower. You might get some odd looks because I don't know if anyone's ever done it. I don't know if it's legal?

About the mountains...Charlotte is in the piedmont, we are about 2 to 3 hours from the mountains, depending on where you want to go and what you want to do. For instance, we are 2:30 from Asheville if that city interests you.

I guess yes you could get along fine w/out a car in Charlotte, but not anywhere near as easily as in NYC.
