The BBQ King isn't located in a dangerous part of town though it's little known because a lot of people think this. It's also one of the few authentic places to eat in Charlotte that has great local food at good prices. I put it in the same category as places like South 21 (another long term drive-in), Prices Chicken Coop, and the now destroyed Coffee Cup and once well visited McDonald's Cafeteria. It's certainly worth the visit.
There used to be a really nice steak house located near there called Staley's Steak House. In addition to good food, it was set in what would now be considered a retro, grotto like setting called the the Charcoal room.
It's great the Food Network did a piece on it. It deserves the recognition especially considering the endless places we have in Charlotte offering up some sort of fake, opps faux in Charlotte, experience.
I've never looked up the crime stats but it sure doesn't look like the greatest part of town. Someone mentioned hookers being over there, I've never seen any but I always assume they are in the same general area as strip clubs and airports.
I tried to find the video from Triple D on the BBQ King but wasn't able to.
If you are talking where the BBQ is located, I have stopped there many times in that part of town over the past 30 years and never had any problems. Is there high crime near there? Maybe, but the same can be said for Plaza-Midwood, Noda, Dilworth, etc. The best places to eat in Charlotte are not found in the gentrified areas. BBQ-King is one of them.

I didn't say there was high crime there. All I said was it looks like a crappy area. I go over to PM all the time to Penguin and I stop on 7th St. for Vis Art Video which is also not a great part of town (juding by how much broken glass is in the parking lot).
There is a special BBQ train from Charlotte to Lexington for the BBQ festival held there on the 24th. Great festival, but the BBQ at the festival, IMO isn't the best that Lexington has to offer, though it is still good. Go to the festival an get some pork BBQ in one of the restaurants. Is this BBQ king any relation to the one in Lincolnton?
