Google maps says it's nearly an hour from here in Steele Creek.
Sounds about right. I-85's exit 68, a hike for us too.
We ended up going to Gary's tonight since we were headed "up north" anyway. The 'Q' was very good - the service excellent & friendly. I didn't try the hickory sweet bbq sauce (not for me), but I can say the homemade peppery-vinegar based sauce (in the unlabeled texas pete looking bottle) was very tasty with a touch of spice.
You guys ought to get off your duffs and drive 25 minutes to Gary's in China Grove. Period.
I could be wrong, but I think Gary's cooks with gas, which in my opinion is just WRONG when you are talking about barbecue.
Apparently, he used to have a pile of wood that he kept outside the restaurant to give the impression that he still used wood, even after he went to gas. He got rid of it after it was quite obvious that it wasn't being used. Can someone verify this story?

I just called them and they swear it is cooked with wood.
Friday Fried Trout dinner with onion rings is the bomb at Bar B-que King. I've been eating there since 1968 and there isn't anything bad on the menu. Wilkinson Blvd. is a main road on Charlotte's west side and those that imply it is not safe don't know what they are talking about. Bar B-que is a must if you want great food, and great atmosphere that has been a Charlotte institution for over 50 years.
I agree with you. Their sandwiches are O.K. I ordered a Macs sandwich at the Festival at the Park last year and it was all fat. It was really sickening. It was from the Macs on South Boulevard. Although I am not a beef eater, I have heard that their brisket is excellent though. Not sure what brisket is. Lots of quantity with less quality as I see it.
I know this is an old post I'm responding to, but I can answer what brisket is. It's that hunk of meat at the front of a steer's chest. So you are eating beef when you eat brisket.
Ive neber been to BBQ King but i watched Guy Fieri eat there at Diners Drive Ins and Dives, other restaurants featured on the show located in Charlotte were The Penguin, Dish, South 21, Cabo fish Taco and Jakes Good Eats. I have to say the best BBQ ive ever had was the vinegar based, supper yummy, extra juicy Shuffletown Burger at the Penguin, need to try it!!
Ive heard this alot, to bad its like 5 mins from house house, but i wonder why is it so packed then? what else do they have in there
