The commercial landscape in alot of communities is about to have another empty big box retailer. Any thoughts on the closing of 16 border's bookstores in the chicagoland area as the company enters into chapter 11 bankruptcy? In chicago 5 of 8 borders stores will close. Including the one at North Avenue and Halsted Street, as well as those in Lincoln Park, Uptown, Lincoln Village and Beverly. The Hyde Park store is already in the process of closing and will shut its doors on March 7.

In the suburbs Borders stores in Norridge, Evanston, Mount Prospect, Deerfield, Bolingbrook, St. Charles, Crystal Lake, McHenry, DeKalb and Matteson are also slated for closure. Outside of Illinois in NWI the location in Merrillville will be closing.

They better not close the one in Matteson. I refuse to believe it. Me and a friend were just talking about last night how upsetting this would be. It's more than just a place.

I prabobly am a hipster at heart (Viva la revolution!). It's hard to really be hipster living with your mom in the suburbs though, the south suburbs at that.

I often pick up Harold's Chicken down the street before or after hanging out at Borders.

You can do it. Just try harder and with a little luck you can get a place in the city.

And because not enough people buy books at Borders. People might buy something from the cafe and read a book in the cafe but we don't buy it.

Borders closing shop will be huge for alot of these neighborhoods that already have empty big box retail space from large retailers going under in the recent year or two. Borders usually locates there stores in the most prime locations, so the empty big box locations will be highly visible. It will be interesting to see how the closing of border's will affect the appearance of the commercial landscape in alot of neighborhoods that have already lost other big box retailers.
