My SIL took me out to a couple of places and it tasted like a burger on a tortilla. Real Mexican is greasy and spicy.

yep, in mexico city it can be hard to find a taco in a restaurant. It's street food, and yes, it's greasy and tasty. No cheese, just onions and cilantro with the meat. And a lime to squeeze on top.

I think maybe he's talking about Los Caminos de Michoacan which is about 2 doors north of the Sheridan L station.

El Jardin and its various iterations.

...
I think you're right.

I was thinking of El Palmar when he mentioned the Holiday Club. I personally prefer El Palmar over Los Caminos.

It was when I was there. Maybe it was where I stayed.

Aside from bars and taco stands, it's hard to find a taco in a restaurant in Mexico city, I know, I searched blocks and blocks and couldn't find any.

I have quite a few Mexican friends, and you can't really stereotype "Mexican food" any more than you can any other culture that's centuries old and has had multiple different ethnic groups contributing.

One of my friends makes her own mole from scratch using a family recipe - spicy, yes. Greasy? Good lord, she'd slap someone for suggesting that. However, more than a few others are definitely all about both the grease and the heat, they bring that sensibility to whatever they eat, often to my shock/horror (ie, putting mexican hot sauce on Thai food, ugh).

I know you are looking for places near Lakeview, but if you ever get a chance to visit Wicker Park I suggest you try Big Star. Their mexican is pricy, but authentic and delicious. Also, the margaritas will kick you butt.
