So Chicago proper puts 70%+ as much people in a land area that is HALF the size of LA proper.

Furthermore, "LA" is really just a big county: Los Angeles county, the most populous county, yes. LA county puts 9.8million people in a land area of over 10,500 square miles.

While Cook County is the 2nd most populous county, which puts 5.4 million people in a land area approx 2,4000 square miles. So Cook county has half the population of LA county in area that is roughly 1/5th the size.

LA feels more sprawling. Chicago feels more dense.

You overestimated the physical size of both counties.

Cook County is 945 sq. miles, while LA County is 4,058.

Sort of...yes my metrics were off - I used sq/km instead of sq/mi. So that means Cook is approx 1/4 the size of LA County, as opposed to 1/5, you're right.

Are you in LA now? Maybe you should finally make the move.

LOL, nice try.

LA metro is at least 4,835 square miles. Urban area is even bigger. And according to the US Census Bureau, Chicago metro population is 9.5 million, while metro LA is 13.3m. Do the math on population per square mile.

Not even sure what you're trying to prove: already proven that Cook County blows away LA County on a density basis.

I like visiting but probably wouldn't want to live there. Are you allergic to facts, Dave? Just wondering...

This thread was on feel and perceptions. Also aspects of your facts were corrected by another. But the only time I ever read you stick up for Chicago was non-Chicago forum. I was surprised for sure.

But we can all post our views and opinions and vote in polls. Stats that can be refuted in a way that shows a correction. Also are valid.

As I do not see the a thread on stats anyway. It is on perceptions, look and of course ..... no one disputes LA is a true mega-city region by population and LA proper already hit 4-million. Or the thread could have ended with one post even when started....

It doesn't look like you understand what the definition of an urban area is. It's based on continuous development down to a certain threshold, 1000 people per square mile I think. Anyway, you've obviously never been to LA. The development is uniform and continuous from the center of the city stretching all the way out to the suburbs for miles upon miles. It's a massive, continuous semi-urban area with gigantic freeways. Chicago, on the other hand, is a centralized area where the density drops off rapidly once you leave the inner-suburbs. New York is similar but just on a much larger scale.

I view Chicago as a mega-city even if falls a bit shy of the 10 million threshold. Besides New York and Los Angeles, it's the only other truly massive urban area in the United States.

It funny, but this whole thing started when I simply pointed out to another poster the fact that LA is much closer in size to Chicago than it is to Tokyo.

I've met Chicago South Sider in person. He's a good guy. He would not try to purposely misinform someone. I put my 7th Degree Black Belt on this..... I have not traveled enough to say if Chicago is a 1st/2nd/3rd city.... But I do know it is a GREAT city. I came down again today. Lunch in Chinatown after riding the Red Line, followed by reading in the Book Cellar and then attending church at St. Mattias in Lincoln Square neighborhood. As far as I'm concerned, you guys are lucky to be a part of a # 1 city! Peace, and good night to all.
