I was at North Ave and Oak street on Monday and I didn't see anything bad at all. There were some thugs running around, but there always are on holidays.

I trust the words of beat cops when it comes to what they've actually seen and witnessed personally. Occasional distrustful bias on their part aside, I think the vast majority of officers are honest about reporting what they themselves witness.

My skepticism is only when it comes to their interpretation of larger trends. They're only human and humans tend to pick and choose what they remember from other people's stories, and be influenced by their own views of how things are and how they should be.

Just as an example with a larger scope: What were the 1960s like? Ask people who lived through them as adults and you get all sorts of answers, from a time for advocating peace and social progress, to a time of violence, war and degeneracy, to a time of drugs and free love. Which was it? And was it a net positive or a net negative? It depends on who you ask, what groups they were part of, and what their view on politics, life and society is. Police - especially beat cops - belong to a distinct group, and being part of that distinct group colors their views when it comes to interpreting larger trends. It's natural, normal, but worthy of at least keeping in context, if not outright skepticism.

Heh.... This came out over emergency alerts. Lot's of robberies going on in Evanston lately.

"
On Saturday June 4, 2011, at approximately 8:26 p.m., a male not affiliated with Northwestern was the victim of an attempted robbery. The victim had parked his motor scooter on the north side of Chicago Avenue across from Wieboldt Hall (300 block) when approximately 15 to 20 male African Americans, all approximately 16 to 20 years old, approached him. One of the subjects threw a baseball at the victim’s face and knocked him to the ground. Several others from the group punched and hit him several times. The victim tried to protect himself and fought back. The subjects eventually fled eastbound toward the lake. Chicago Police and Northwestern University Police responded, and Chicago Police later arrested three members believed to be part of the group on mob action charges. The victim was treated on the scene by Chicago Fire Department paramedics. No proceeds were taken from the victim. The victim could not provide descriptions of the multiple subjects involved.

University Police remind all community members to use caution when traveling, especially at night. Report suspicious activities immediately to the University Police or Chicago Police by dialing 911 or by utilizing a Blue Light Emergency Telephone. You can also contact the Northwestern University Police Department by dialing (312) 503-3456. Contact the Chicago Police Department if you have any information that might assist in this investigation."

Actually, that didn't happen in Evanston. It happened on NU's downtown campus in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood. This report from the Chicago Tribune makes that more clear:

7 arrested in mob action attack downtown

Oh gotcha, for some reason I was confusing Wieboldt Hall for another one!

There has been stuff in Evanston too though, but a LOT down there ... lots of cars broken in there, and muggings as well.

Here is one from last week Evanston... but not that.

On Monday May 30, 2011 at approximately 11:01 PM, a male Northwestern student was the victim of a robbery while walking through the Engelhart parking lot. The victim stated that two offenders approached him from behind. One subject grabbed the victim by the neck and a second subject was in possession of a large wooden stake. The two subjects demanded money. The victim then turned over $10.00 and his IPhone. The two offenders then fled westbound on Foster Street. The student utilized an emergency phone to contact the police. The student was not harmed or injured. Northwestern University Police and Evanston Police immediately responded but were unable to locate the suspects.

Both subjects were described by the victim as male African American 5’7” to 5’8” tall and having thin builds.
The first subject was also described as wearing a black tank top and a black baseball cap worn backwards.
The victim could not provide a detailed description of the second subject.

University Police reminds all community members to use caution when traveling, especially at night. Utilize the shuttle bus system or Saferide services whenever possible. Report suspicious activities immediately to the University Police or Evanston Police by dialing 911 or by utilizing a Blue Light Emergency Telephone. Contact University Police at 847-491-3456 if you have any information that might assist in this investigation.

Then another one...

On Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 11:26 p.m., a male Northwestern student was the victim of a robbery in the 2000 block of Ridge Avenue in Evanston. The student was walking there when he was approached from behind by two men. The men implied they had a knife and demanded money from the victim. The student gave them $40 and they fled in an unknown direction.

The student was not injured and no weapons were displayed

The victim could not provide a detailed description of the assailants.

The Northwestern University Police Department advises all community members to be alert when traveling on or off campus, especially at night. The Northwestern shuttle bus service provides transportation to areas both on and off campus every night until 3 a.m. In addition, SafeRide provides free rides at night.

Report suspicious activity immediately to University Police or Evanston Police by dialing 911 or by using a Blue Light emergency telephone. Contact the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000 if you have any information that may assist in this investigation.

I get alerts all the time so get them messed up... the alerts have been more than usual lately though.

As for the downtown campus

University Police Advises Chicago Campus Community To Continue Awareness and Prevention of iPhone/iPod Robberies as well as Burglaries to Auto

Northwestern University Police (UP) has issued an alert to the Northwestern University Chicago campus community to be aware of incidents of robbery in the areas on and near campus as well as public transportation stations and stops. The robbers have been targeting individuals using their smart phones or high-end electronic devices such as iPods or iPhones while walking or commuting to the campus. UP is also warning of an increase in auto burglaries in the campus garages where valuables such as GPS systems are stored inside the vehicle in plain view.

UP has added additional patrol resources to the Chicago campus over the past several weeks in an effort to prevent such crimes and to apprehend offenders. In addition, Chicago Police are also increasing patrols in the River North and downtown areas as well as at El and Metra stations. Chicago Police officials have previously related that smartphones and other high-end devices are increasingly popular with would-be thieves. Robbers watch for individuals wearing white earbuds as they believe they are connected to iPhones or iPods. The robberies have occurred in areas near or on public transit where the frequent train stops can allow for a quick getaway.

Closer to campus, UP was recently made aware of an incident that occurred in the 500 block of North McClurg Court involving a strong arm robbery where two Northwestern students were victimized. This incident occurred on May 11, 2011 at 3:44AM. Similar incidents involving Northwestern community members included an attempted strong arm robbery of a student on April 24, 2011 at 8:40 PM in the 300 block of East Chicago Avenue and a December 7, 2010 incident at 6:15AM in which a Northwestern staff member was punched several times when the offender demanded the victim’s wallet. An individual not affiliated with the University was also the victim of a strong arm robbery on January 5, 2011 in the 200 block of East Superior Street. In that incident, the offender pushed the victim to the ground, grabbed the victim’s iPad and fled the area.

According to information gathered through the Chicago Police 18th District, there have been a total of 38 incidents of robbery between February 11, 2011 and May 11, 2011 within a half-mile radius of the Chicago campus. Of the 38 incidents 26 were strong arm robberies where no weapon was used or displayed. Thirty of the incidents occurred between 2PM in the afternoon and 6AM the next morning.

UP has also had 21 reported incidents of auto burglary since January 1, 2011 in the C and D parking lots used by Northwestern community members. In these incidents it was apparent that the offenders were targeting vehicles that had valuables displayed in the passenger compartments - most commonly GPS devices. The offenders were looking into cars to see if valuables were present. If they saw something in plain view, the burglar would smash a window and remove the valuables. The lots have increased security personnel on patrol due to these issues and UP officers are also making frequent patrols of these lots.

UP asks all community members to be aware of these crime patterns. When walking or using public transportation keep alert and aware of your surroundings. Do not walk with headphones on, as you may not hear subjects coming up to you. Try to keep smartphones and other valuables out of sight. If a robber confronts you, cooperate and give up any items demanded. Attempt to inconspicuously look at the robber to provide police with a good description including sex, race, height, weight, build, complexion, hair color/style, and clothing - including hats and jackets. If a weapon is displayed, describe the weapon as well. We understand that the shock of the situation may not allow you to remember everything, but do your best to try to remember these details. At the first opportunity, call 911 or if on campus utilize a campus “Blue Light” emergency phone, which connects directly to University Police. For a map of Chicago Campus Blue Light phones go to: http://www.northwestern.edu/up/forms...campus_map.pdf

To avoid being the victim of an auto burglary, be sure to secure your car at all times. Keep all valuables out of plain sight when leaving your vehicle. Report suspicious activity to UP by calling 312-503-3456. Examples of suspicious activity may include the sound of breaking glass, someone lingering in the parking or elevator lobby area or someone peering into car windows.
University community members may also contact University Police at 312-503-3456 to request safety escorts on foot or with a bike patrol officer to on-campus locations. Squad car escorts are also available on the Chicago campus. Please note, there may be a waiting period for escorts as the result of concurrent police activities.

If you have any questions or can provide any information regarding these types of incidents, please contact UP at 312-503-3456. Thank you for your attention to these issues.

This is clearly an escalating problem that needs to be dealt with. The Chicago Police Dept now has a "text to tip" number, 274637 (CRIMES), which allows anyone to anonymously text a tip to them. I think anyone in Streeterville, North Ave Beach or wherever they are who happens to see a menacing group of young thugs up to no good need to text that information in. Lift the gun ban...and give us law-abiding folks a chance. If my wife and I are surrounded...I'd like to at least be able to take a few with me.
