Hi all:

Moving to Chicago in a few weeks for a job. I have a big dog. I'm a single woman. Is the Washington Square Park area safe? I'm looking at Delaware Place on the Park for obvious reasons (dog friendly, near park, near work, with balcony and in my price range) but just need to be somewhere about $2200 or less, private balcony, near a green space for my dog (no stairs cuz she's old) and near work which is Walton and N. State. Any advice would be great.

keys:
safe
dog friendly
not too young (i'm single but also 46 so i don't want to live in a dorm lol)
private balcony
$2200 rent or less

Thanks.

That's a great location. No issues at all.

One minor caveat; the park is a little bummy in warmer weather. Sometimes more than just a little.

Default In a relative sort of way...

There are absolutely some "homeless types" that linger around Washington Square Park, especially in nicer weather BUT the nature of that part of Chicago (basically just a few blocks from not just highly visible tourist locales along Michigan Ave, but home to institutions (Newberry Library, Moody Bible Institute) that attract visitors from around the globe) is quite charming. One of the nicer side effects of history of insiders demanding their little slice of the city is "well policed" -- Chicago is notoriously intolerant of "messy, stoned and/or aggressive homeless people". You will likely NOT have to worry about anything like the crazies in San Francisco. Arguably the City "over patrols" the homeless in areas like Washington Square Park and that sort of makes other areas more like to be the choice of less sociable homeless types that encamp in vacant lots and such...

Unless you really want something in Lincoln Park or Lakeview, where you will have HORDES of kids / nannies you won't find much better a park for strolling.
