Great info in these responses. Leading me to understand that the two places i have made offers on are safe areas. As for the tax thing, i am not worried about taxes, i just saw that online not long ago and at first glance it makes anyone think prop taxes are going down 10% by next year.

Interesting. I lived in Evanston, IL for over 35 years. Heard one gunshot (animal control putting down a deer that got hit by an *el* train).
Heard a few though on the fourth of July in the city near the school where I taught (Benito Juarez).

"Am i crazy for wanting to move to Chicago when all i hear is record amounts of shootings ???"

Sadly you are indeed crazy. Chicago's violence is off the charts; nothing in Paris, Tokyo, or Buenos Aires could compare.

Plain and simple, Chicago is an American city.

Thus you would be moving to a place with endless amounts of guns and endless shootings because of them. Keep in mind that this is a nation where a mass shooting, high in the two digits of faceless victims, gets reported on the second page of the news, is treated with the perfunctory "thoughts and prayers" and is forgotten about by the time the next news cycle begins (spoiler alert: that would be two hours from now). Point being, Chicago and America are awash in blood. And apathy. Without any element of community and the commons that word comes from. You'd be shocked at how much crime can be generated in a nation with one of the highest rates of income inequality in the world. Chicago's violence is an export from another US city, NRAshington, DC. The US is the type of nation where nobody sleeps well for fear of being shot to death in their sleep in places like Mayberry.

My suggestion: consider either Windsor or Tijuana. Preferably Windsor. At least it has a river for protection.

taxes aren't going down... ever... they got bills to pay and a huge financial hole to climb out of... you'll care about taxes eventually, they absolutely kill you on them in Chicago

Where are you coming from?

The media hyped "shootings" would not deter me from moving to Chicago. Vast majority of shootings are gang vs. gang in isolated areas on South/West side.

Most of the shootings are in the bad neighborhoods mentioned in previous threads. Jefferson Park is very safe. No real risk of shootings. Property taxes are high and won't be going down. Mass shootings are different than the type of shootings Chicago experiences. Fortunately Chicago area has not experienced mass shootings. Don't listen to everything you hear in the news unless you check it out.

It's rough out there in the streets of Chicago. There is no guarantee of safety anywhere. I'm afraid to leave my home.

Chicago South Sider, and even though the "south side of Chicago" does get a bad reputation at times, WE KNOW there are great and safe areas, to match! You would know better than I, but I always feel safe. Reflecting on my visits in 2019, I've been to Pilsen, Heart of Chicago, Canaryville and Armour Square. Certainly Lincoln Square on the Northside is a favorite neighborhood. I love Chicago, ANY side!!!! Have a great day! Master Jay in Milwaukee
