Final 2023 murder stats.

2023 = 584
2022 = 692
2021 = 794
2020 = 778
2019 = 502
2018 = 547

100 murder drop each year the last two years. Something positive.

Totally aware of the other crime spikes, so let's not go there. Not the point of this post.

Unusual drop considering, like you stated, that most the other stats go the opposite direction. Could be that the current group of hood-rats just aren't as good of shots. That, and kudos to the emergency room doctors and nurses.

Heyjackass reports 172,540 shots detected in Chicago in 2023 by the ShotSpotter system. This means a gunshot about every 3 minutes on average ... This does not include the 13,186 rounds detected on January 1 2023 courtesy of New Years eve celebrations . Also, not every neighbourhood has a ShotSpotter system so the actual number of gunshots is likely much higher.

Good morning, and Happy New Year!

I just read that 6 cars were broken into recently, in my beloved Lincoln Square neighborhood.

Am I wrong, or is there some strange connection that crimes increased and spread during and post-Covid????

Good day, I just read an article on the arrests of migrants, most recently in Oak Lawn.

New to Chicagoland, language barriers, freezing cold, inadequate housing, lack of jobs for so many...

WHO would have forseen them stealing and committing crimes, at some point after their arrival?

I will be in the Downers Grove and Wheaton areas next week. How are they as far as car break-ins lately? Will be staying near the intersection if I-355 and I-88. I know to lock my vehicle and not leave valuables in sight.

I would have posted this under Chicago Suburbs but read the guidelines and they don't want crime related posts there.

Thanks.

I was sad, seeing a recent article that Naperville was one of THE best cities in the Chicagoland area.

And then I read that more recently there was a string of car break-ins.

It's as if the Devil was at work to ruin something good, after positive attention was brought to something.

Theft is up everywhere in the USA. Retail theft, car theft, etc.

People have gotten more comfortable with the idea of stealing from others. They feel it's justified and aren't getting punished harshly enough for it.

Wheaton and Downers Grove are quiet, leafy suburbs where you're least likely to encounter any issues. Then again, all bets are off these days. To wit:

I'll just refer back to this earlier post...

Catalytic converter theft overnight is your biggest risk. Park under the lights, in a high visibility spot if possible.
