I'm wondering about this, because on the one hand, cremation is much cheaper than burial and I don't really want a bunch of money spent on me when I'm dead. But on the other hand, I've heard that being cremated is not allowed for Christians. Does anybody have any understanding on this topic?

I don't believe there is anything in the Bible that specifically condemns the practice. The only thing I can think of is that some Christians believe man was created from the dust of the earth, so we should return to the earth when we pass (depending how you read Gen 3:19).

I plan to be cremated. If God wants my loved ones to give me an earth burial, he can magically send a $8,000 check and a card with directions to them. Knowing my wife, though, she'll have me cremated anyway and then go hit the casino with the other 7k.

What happens to your body as a Christian after you die is irrelevant. There may be taboos within certain denominations regarding the matter (I don't know if there are or not), but Biblically speaking, how the body is disposed of after death doesn't matter. When the soul departs from the body at the point of physical death the body becomes an empty house, and whether the body decomposes, or is burned up, or is blown up or vaporized in an explosion, or eaten by an animal is of no consequence. When it comes time for the body to be resurrected God can regather the atoms of the body no matter what has happened to the body. If you want to be cremated that's fine.

No, never heard anything at all like that about Christians.

You might be confused by the fact that Jewish religious laws prohibit cremation, although not all Jews today follow that.

It is perfectly fine. It is not un Christian and more people are doing it nowadays (for a variety of reasons).

Don't pastors mutter something about "ashes to ashes" stuff?

Ashes to ashes. I think that it is okay for Christians, maybe not okay for Catholics. Cremation is growing in popularity. When you think about the process of traditional embalming, burial, etc. it doesn't seem like a nice way to go. The embalmer does things with cotton balls, etc. When one dies, but had pre-chosen the option of cremation (I sound like a mortician here) it is a personal preference and should be respected by family and friends. One's physical body becomes powder, which when released is free to drift around the world, instead of being cooped up in a box. Cremation used to be thought of as untraditional and even strange by some people. When Princess Margaret chose cremation, every one just thought it was because she had always been a Bohemian and lived life "differently" but nowadays cremation is a popular choice for growing numbers of people.

Some denominations believe that to be burned is to lose a resurrection as fire is used by God to destroy his enemies.
