Actually Adam was. It wasn't until he ate that it was a real problem as we are told Eve was deceived but Adam wasn't.
God knew in that moment who was stronger, and it was not Adam. The future lay with Eve. She became the choice for childbearing. It was unclear until then.
I don't think they had a knowledge of good or a knowledge of evil until they disobeyed God and suffered the consequences of that act by getting kicked out of the garden and knowing what it was like to work by the sweat of the brow. Before that they merely freely plucked fruit from the garden and never thanked God for it and never knew how really good they had it. They never knew the evil of dying nor the good of not dying until they ate.
They did not get kicked out of the garden because they ate from the Tree Of Good and Bad...And they were made mortal not immortal...
I like how you said that it was between them and God....and they struck out on their own.
When we sin it too is between us and God. The difference is that A&E chose to sin whereas we can sin by mistake, by accident. Their original leanings were upright, whereas through inherited imperfection our leanings are toward wrongdoing through No fault of our own. That is why God sent the pre-human Jesus to us to balance the scales of justice for us.
As with the man Job, Satan challenges all of us. ' Touch our flesh.... ' ( loose physical health ) and we would Not serve God. - Job 2:4,5. That issue was Not to go one forever and ever. We are nearing the coming ' time of separation ' of Matthew 25:31,32 when the humble 'sheep-like' people can remain alive on earth, and continue living on earth right into the start of Jesus' coming 1000-year governmental reign over earth when sickness and enemy death will be No more.
- Isaiah 33:24; 1st Cor. 15:26
right ... that's why Jesus said the Jewish religious leaders that refused to believe that he was the promised Messiah belong to Satan.
"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was
a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he
lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." ~ Jesus
right ... that's why every word that Jesus said was not his and that condemned the Jewish religious leaders that refused to believe that he was the promised Messiah:
"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." ~ Jesus
devil is greek for slanderer...satan is Hebrew for adversary...Even G-d can be a satan...

Besides...All of a sudden this evil, G-d opposing character pops up in history?...
