Jesus was saying this man’s humility (seeing his sinful nature) was what saved him, no?
No, He is saying that this is a much better position to come into a relationship from. It IS the beginning of a determination to change. Those who are self-righteous don't think they need to.

Jesus did not say this was the way to him, he said I Am the way, we go to the Father in and BY the state of Jesus Christ. Jesus in the "parable" was actually rebuking the pharisee and saying "look, this one you look down upon to be a sinner as got more about himself than you", which would of been real offensive to the pharisee, that someone that he looked down upon was leaving the temple justified.

I can agree with your thoughts on that to an extent. I would word it this way though "Jesus was saying only when the man accepted his limitations of being human could he embrace the divine in himself and others." You highlight it as sin, sin, sin and I was offering that it wasn't sin but just what it means to be human. Jesus didn't condemn him because Jesus accepts that we are merely human. He already knows us and loves us anyway. Remember what God said to Adam in the garden of Eden after the fruit salad incident? "Who told you that you are naked?' It's man's rejection of his own humanity that causes us shame and keeps us from God.
I heard a one liner I thought was good: Satan calls us by our sin but Jesus calls us by our name. I don't know what the person meant by that but I hear Satan likes to remind us we are merely human and wants us to feel shame over that causing us to hide from Jesus when He calls us out.
On another note I find it odd in a riddle sort of way that those who humble themselves would be exalted. Would a humble person desire to be exalted? I think it's another one of those passages that can trigger someone whose heart isn't yet in the place it needs to be. Hmmmmmm...yes I desire to be exalted so I shall become humble. I don't think it works that way.

In other words, support the fishers of men. Fishing deep into working people's "treasures", they dropped their own nets (and other tools for doing manual labor) years ago after hearing the "call".

I mean, what happens inside? And why is a public expression required if one is saved by faith alone?
