Many exorcists go after the demons right away. That approach presents at least two problems. First it challenges the demons when they are strong. This can result in a big fight that is not good either for the exorcist or for the person in whom the demons inhabit. Secondly, the amount of emotional garbage that the person has harbored, that is, deep-seated resentment from past emotional abuse. That emotional garbage may be so great that a person is a sitting duck for the banished demons to come back. So even after a successful exorcism, the person is at risk of being Re-infested, perhaps by more demons than before.

Unfortunately, there are many "emotionally" disturbed and troubled people on both sides of this ritual of exorcism, which has ended in deadly consequences due to religious ignorance, including the killing of an eight-year old boy (2003) who was merely autistic. And others with various disabilities, rather than actually being possessed by a demon, that doesn't exist.

That's why it was established earlier that only some emotional disturbances are deemed to be demonic. Exorcists do not make hasty conclusions. Instead they are circumspect.
Just ran across this strange current event of an Exorcist, Stephen Rosetti: Stephen Rosetti of Washington,D.C., is an exorcist, licensed psychologist and counselor who is warning Catholics that demons have figured out how to send threatening text-messages to their targets. The Daily Star reported that Rosetti claims to have "three cases in which demons have texted the team and/or the family of the possessed person. All were high-value targets with high-ranking, powerful demons involved." For example, one text read, "Her torments start now, priest...all night. We will make her bleed." Rosetti points to a long history of demons influencing technology, such as flickering lights and TVs.
According to Catholic exorcists, individual demons specialize or focus on individual human emotions-- resentment, or greed, or lust, etc. A demon can be invited in either consciously or unconsciously. Example of conscious invitation would be the Ouija board. On the other hand, an Unconscious one would be wallowing in a negative emotion resulting from difficult past experience. For example, a person who is being physically or emotionally mistreated is reacting normally by getting angry. When, however, the anger is clung to, causing permanent resentment, bitterness, and unforgiveness, a weakness is created that can give the demon the opportunity to enter the person. Such attitudes create what Exorcists call emotional or spiritual garbage that demons can feed on. The Catholics are the ones authorized to perform Exorcisms, so they know. They have the documentation.
Good post that I could relate to. We were always warned against the Ouija board for this very reason, along with other "divination" like Tarot, etc.
It took some strong Christian counseling to make me realize I was wallowing in bitterness, anger, resentment to the point of hating my life, this past year. I was succumbing to some kind of evil influence. It was very real and taking over my life. I had to come to a place of forgiveness and gained some freedom finally, but it was touch and go for a while. I am so thankful for my online church's counseling that got me through this.
I hesitate to call the experience "demonic" but it was some kind of evil, consuming influence that I inadvertently let into my life, even as a Christian.
