the problem is that whoever was appointed for one life time are long gone. Paul maintained that system and those are gone too. Eventually spiritless people took over the church, Paul had hand picked teachers running churches. A few years after his death it was all gone and mostly still is.
I agree. That's what I believe happened, but even though it was pretty much inevitable, the only way we would not be so divided today is if the Apostles could have held the Church together.

He said, “There is no regularly constituted church of Christ on earth, nor any person qualified to administer any church ordinances; nor can there be until new apostles are sent by the Great Head of the Church for whose coming I am seeking.”

yes, periodically people of proper thinking would appear but always had to work against some authorities or established order, Christ Jesus mentioned false teachers - so many of which are now, and he did not mean small group of 'heretics' but in the mainstream, those took over a long time ago and divided and spread everywhere.
