I'm with Kjbrill on this too... Why Boston? Is it because that's what we're trained to think? Is it because it's been favored by Hollywood more?

I think a city that had two major news papers in a foreign in circulation even before an English version was established and a city that has literally lost 2/3 of it's historic architecture and still blows Historical Preservationist away with what we currently have still standing ... along with Topography, river, and urban park system, etc. makes a strong case. Now, we just need our rail-lines back!

My mother -- with her ridiculous Pittsburgh accent and therefore no room to talk about talking "funny" -- says I drawl. If I've had two too many beers (which most nights is ... three ... *sigh* ... ), you couldn't tell, though, that I'm not from deepest, darkest Kentucky. All those formative years hanging out at the Little Horse Tavern in Leb'nin must have rubbed off on me.

I ought to affect a South Philly accent and see what she says.

Anybody who says Cincinnati is Southern does not have their geography right.

Cincinnati is not the South but there are some people around the area that may make you think that you are in the backwards minded areas of the South. They are easy to recognize with their Confederate flags (I saw one flying outside of a house in Newtown - very disturbing).

And no, I am not calling everyone in the South backwards minded - I am just speaking of those who will not give, "the South will rise again" rhetoric a rest.

Rebel flag doesn't necessarily mean backwards. And you can find people up in michigan who for better or worse relate to it.

Yesterday I asked my wife off the cuff, "is Cincinnati in the south?" she said "yes" without a skipping a beat. "Midwest?" I asked. "Nope. South." "Dayton?" I asked. "Midwest" she replies.

It's me. When people ask North or South I instantly think in terms of Civil War and not geography. But in both instances, I still say North.

In realtion to North America, yes Cincinnati is the south. In relation to the United States of America, Cincinnati is considered to be in the upland south/midwest transition zone. Our vegetation and climate is closer to that of southern states than those in the north. This can be seen in various needle palms, Magnolia, Bluegrass, and even the presence of wall lizards throughout the mid-southern portions of the metro area.

The ONLY reason we can be considered north is because of the Mason dixon, but geographically we are very much Southern (More Virginia like, than Wisconsin/New England like) And yes you can hear the southern drawl in alot of peoples voices.

The Confederate Flag is a real can of worms. Up here in the "midwest" the flying of the Stars and Bars is usually the result of an expression of racism. Not always, but enough so that people of good judgment do not display it. But, in the deep south the flag usually has nothing to do with racism but rather is a proper expression of southern pride for what might have been an independent nation. Slavery was on the way out in any event. And, many AA persons will tell you that there is more racial reconciliation in the deep south than other places to the north.

Cincinnati was historically considered to be a boarder state.

During, and before, the Civil War Cincy was a major stop on the underground railroad. Ohio was definitely Union and KY was Confederate.
