Keep in mind that the NY trio is in the same state and in turn has 1 government to deal with in terms of state government, as well as the fact that the other trio involves the biggest cities in those states(St. Louis is a bigger metro though).
Also, for the Syracuse area, Cayuga County is counted in some censuses and some years it isn't. So, a county with about 80-85,000 people is added or taken away from that metro. It is the latter, as of now. There's also the Ithaca metro, which includes 40,000 person Cortland County. That county also touches Onondaga County, the county Syracuse is in. There are also smaller metros which touch the metros of the NY trio or other adjacent metros besides Ithaca like Elmira, Binghamton, Utica-Rome and Jamestown.

True, but the same can be said for the prairie trio:
Cedar Rapids, IA
Waterloo, IA
Iowa City, IA
Sioux City, IA-NE
St joseph, Mo
Topeka, KS
Manhattan, KS
Lawrence,KS
That's great that the NY trio is in the same state, which helps the NY state statistics. The Prairie trio is in a similar land area, but in a crossroads of states, but equal tug-n-pull on each other as the NY trio. Except we have more people and are growing relatively fast.
Also, the fact that the Buffalo metro is blocked or can't count the adjacent Canadian population, that metro count underestimates it influence/metro, in a sense.

How many do they say are undercounted due to the Canadian border?

While true, the NY trio is not that big in land size and can be done within 3 hours. Some counties are growing in that trio like Ontario and Seneca, as well as Tompkins as far as adjacent areas. Niagara County has grown a tad too. Keep in mind that estimates have been known to be off and there has been signs of stablization.

Understood, the same goes with the Prairie trio. You can commute from any of these cities to the others within three hours as well.
I'm glad that the NY trio is stabilizing. There is a lot of potential and good things about those cities and that area. A lot of history is there.

Well, the Niagara Region of Ontario has probably about 150-200,000 people, if not more. You have cities like Niagara Falls, Welland, Fort Erie, St Catharines and some others that get Buffalo media, cheer for the teams there and go to the area to shop. Hamilton isn't too far either.

Hamilton is its own distinct region. I highly doubt that any Hamiltonians would consider themselves part of the Buffalo metroplex.
