A "dominant" state is one that culturally influences neighboring states without being influenced much itself. A "submissive" state is one that is culturally influenced by neighboring states without influence much itself. Which states do you consider dominant, and which states do you consider submissive? The following lists are just my perception, so take it for what it's worth.

Dominant states

- California (influences Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Washington)
- Georgia (influences Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina)
- Illinois (influences Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin)
- Massachusetts (influences Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island)
- Michigan (influences Indiana and Ohio)
- Minnesota (influences North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin)
- New York (influences Connecticut and New Jersey)
- North Carolina (influences South Carolina and Virginia)
- Pennsylvania (influences New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia)
- Texas (influences Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma)
- Utah (influences Idaho and Arizona)
- Washington (influences Idaho and Oregon)

Submissive states

- Arkansas (influenced by Louisiana and Texas)
- Connecticut (influenced by Massachusetts and New York)
- Delaware (influenced by Maryland and Pennsylvania)
- Idaho (influenced by Washington and Utah)
- Iowa (influenced by Illinois and Minnesota)
- Mississippi (influenced by Alabama and Louisiana)
- New Jersey (influenced by New York and Pennsylvania)
- New Mexico (influenced by Arizona and Texas)
- Oregon (influenced by California and Washington)
- South Carolina (influenced by Georgia and North Carolina)
- West Virginia (influenced by Pennsylvania and Virginia)
- Wisconsin (influenced by Illinois and Minnesota)

States that are on neither list likely influence some states while being influenced by others.

- Arkansas (influenced by Louisiana and Texas)

As a person born in Arkansas I'm going to say a big "no" to that. Maybe Southern Arkansas is influenced by Louisiana and Texas, but where I was born the influence was minimal. I've since met Louisianans and they're not that much like the people "back home." I also think New Mexico and South Carolina have fairly strong cultures of their own.

To be honest I'm not sure there's a way to do this without sounding insulting to a state. Although I could see how some fairly small states might be "submissive" in a way. Like maybe Delaware is "submissive" to Pennsylvania and Maryland. Vermont might have a fairly strong upstate New York influence. I could see Oklahoma having a strong Texas and Arkansas influence, even if Arkansas wouldn't claim it. Nevada does seem to have a majority be from other states and I'd imagine California is a strong influence there.

eh - i'm ok with my state being "submissive". NJ and CT's submissiveness has also made them the wealthiest and most educated states in the country (and 2 of the most expensive). whatevah.

Somehow I knew that this thread would cause some grumblings from residents of New Jersey.

And, Tahiti, you are absolutely right, though NJ has it very convenient. It's near the cities of New York and Philadelphia, its residents benefit from the job opportunities in those places, but NJ doesn't have to deal with the negatives of having those cities within its borders (huge swaths of poverty and crime).

Of course NJ does have its share of these problems, mainly in the NJ cities that are near New York and Philadelphia.

North Carolina is not influenced by Georgia. The Piedmont Crescent is influemced by Atlanta. I would say NC does influence SC to some degree and NC is probably seen as the "better" Carolina. Although in the South there is tons of autonomy.

Erm, based on the crapton of Mormons that we have here (and, thus, knowing something about Mormon history), I'd say that Utah has definitely influenced Colorado...

Maryland influenced by Pennsylvania? Hmm.. that's a tough one, maybe western Maryland is because they root for Pittsburgh teams. Maryland is a mixed state. It's more influenced by D.C. and northern Virginia than it is by Pennsylvania. And Baltimore influences a part of southern Pennsylvania.

Utah has a "standing army" in all 50 states and most nations. LOL

The state is influential well beyond its borders.
