That's a ridiculous thing to say, and is clearly coming from somebody who knows nothing about these places. In particular, Providence and Hartford are the core cities in their states, and are certainly comparable to places like Des Moines or Omaha or Mobile or what have you. If they weren't near NYC or Boston, they'd still be the lead cities in their states, and arguably regional centers.

Ive been to all of the cities mentioned while living back east for 8 years what is your basis for saying these cities would be meaningful if they werent where they are now. Give me an example of a state where the cities could be located and be the same city they are now and be the big deal you ridiculously claim they would be. Sounds like a typical lifetime East Coaster speaking when they know nothing about the rest of the country. You are entitled to your opinion about this just as I am but dont assume...

Those names are awfully coincidental given that the Whalers became the Hurricanes and share an arena with NC State Wolfpack basketball.

Lol, that actually made me laugh. Just one of those coincidences. Is there a Huskies team for anything in North Carolina?

Does this work?

Also, Salem Massachusetts was one of the top 10 most populous cities during the first 4 US censuses. http://www.census.gov/population/www...0027/tab01.txt A few other Massachusetts port cities have fallen from their former glory (as economic and population power houses) as well.
