Seeing in person is easier than theorizing it. Florida and AZ have some notorious areas like this due to retirement. More conservative areas are also notorious for this if you are in the 25-40 crowd and single. I agree with the sucking of Jacksonville... Tallahassee and Gainesville have equal or better night life. Maybe not for 30+ but 18-25(6), most definitely. Ft. Lauderdale also kills Jacksonville in nightlife.
I never thought about the retirement crowd factor... but for other places I don't get it. I'm up in Rochester and have a metro area of about a million. If we can have several entertainment areas here, catering to different crowds, I can't see how much bigger metros areas don't have the same.
As far as employment opportunities are concerned, the sunbelt is miniscule being that it relies on service industries. The Sunbelt relies on construction and real estate for its economic sector. When those two industries lag, the service industry lags as well. Wonder why the Sunbelt suffers from the highest unemployment rates in the country?
As far as dating goes, it depends on the individual. I don't think a region determines someone's dating potentials.
Nightlife sucks in most parts of the sunbelt. There is no explanation needed.
Basically if I were young I would loo at where popualtion is gainig and industry and business is moving. It certainly isn't the rustbelt for sometime now.
Sometimes I just want to look at people who tell me a major city is boring and ask "How?". Im not a crazy resourceful dude, but Ive been to cities like Sioux Falls, Amarillo, and Evansville and managed to find places to eat and places to hang out in. They may not be Miami Beach, but its not like there is nothing. Yet, someone tells me they are bored in Phoenix or Indianapolis? I think they just dont try hard.
yeah, I have been to cities smaller than 200K too and had a ball.
You can't go to Phoenix and Indianapolis looking for Paris, but if you can't find anything to do in those places then something is definitely wrong.

People assume that AZ is just like FL when it comes to retirees, and that is an incorrect assumption. More retirees flock to FL than AZ. AZ attracts more younger people than retirees.

Tempe by itself is a lot of fun
I do agree, most cities of 1 million or over have pretty much all the entertainment options you want: clubs, pubs, bars, lounges, theatres, concert halls, arenas. Some have alot more than others, though, and while alot of bigger cities have all of this on paper, the actual reality is a little uninspiring.
