No. Whites make up 67% of the city of Pittsburgh proper and most of the suburbs are 90%+ white. Plus, the pens have sold out every game since Feb 14, 2007 (there have been 206 home games since then not including playoffs I believe) and have the highest TV ratings for a US NHL market. Detroit which is 2nd in US NHL hockey ratings doesn't even have half the points that Pittsburgh does.

Pittsburgh currently supports it's NHL team, but it wasn't all that long ago that Pittsburgh's ownership was threatening to move the team. Also, how well does the Pittsburgh area support youth, high school, college, minor league, or even amateur hockey? It doesn't and therefore isn't what I would consider a true hockey city. Heck, Roseau, MN a town of about 2,600 has produced more NHL players than the Pittsburgh area.

Did you see the arena they were playing in? You know, the one that opened in 1961? It was the oldest remaining arena in the NHL. The relocation threat had zero to do with fan support, and everything to do with an obsolete arena. If an obsolete arena is enough for the Islanders to consider relocating out of New York, then apparently any city can be forsaken because of one.

Buffalo only supports the sabres because the Bills have been horrible for years. back when the bills weren't horrible (long long time ago) they were giving away sabres tickets. Anyone who goes to a Sabres game when the Leafs are in town knows who the real fans are.

Where's St. Paul? We stole the title "Hockey City USA" from Detroit a few years ago!

Minnesota VS. Michigan, NCAA DI College Hockey Championship game, 6:00 pm on ESPN. This will reveal this year's true 'hockey state'.

The Greater Toronto Hockey League has over 50,000 players (not in history, at once). More than 10% of the current NHL players are products of the GTHL. No other city in the world even comes CLOSE to those numbers.
