Only in criteria which Im sure he never anticipated, Oakland still does pretty well, despite all the negatives which you felt compelled to share in this thread as if people didnt already know that.

In fact, I was the one who brought up things most would never imagine.
You can easily bring up the stats for the things you've mentioned and it's true that Oakland will do great in a lot of measures. Of course, there's the easy metrics to point to for why Canadian cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver rank so much higher than American cities, and it's on point to mention the high crime rates and inequality.

It's a topic for the Canadian to gloat, and it is incredibly annoying, but it's still on the mark--there are serious issues found in American cities. Of course, this doesn't mean that I'd rather live in Toronto than SF or LA though.

LOL. Not only that, but it's not true to say California's Universities are superior to Canada's. The opposite is true in fact. Canada's Universities give you much more bang for the buck.

*yawns* Academically speaking, Canadian schools as a whole are not even in the same universe as California schools as a whole.

I just looked at The Beer Store Toronto's prices, a 4-pack of Boddingtons sets you back $10.50CDN, I can pick it up at Pavilion's for $6.99.

6 pact of Amstel is damn near $12.40; I'd pay $7.99 here, if I actually wanted to buy a pack of that drool.

Sam Adams - which I would buy - is $13.50, where I pay $7.99.

Oh, and that's not including the tax... which totals 18% in Toronto.

So, to get a 6-pack of Sam Adams, I'd walk out sans damn near $16.00 loonies.

Quality of life, my...!

Again, I love Canada, but when I would go up there to see my GF, I always dreaded hitting the bars or going to the beer store. I just took to throwing a 12-pack in my trunk and shoving a bottle of whiskey under the seat...
