Interesting article.

When I look at the older crime reports May. Oct. Nov. Dec. & Jan (because of late/delayed reports) seem to be the worst months of the year crime wise in Dallas.

Quote:
Study: When it gets above 90 degrees in Dallas, crime cools off. Or at least it used to, anyway.

Their study’s a sequel of sorts to a 2000 look-see titled “Violence is a curvilinear function of temperature in Dallas: a replication,” and when parsing the data, they discovered that when temps cracked the 90-degree mark, crime sought refuge in cooler climes. Or, as they put it: “We found that daily mean ambient temperature is related in a curvilinear fashion to daily rates of violent crime with a positive and increasing relationship between temperature and aggravated crime that moderates beyond temperatures of 80°F and then turns negative beyond 90°F.”

Dallas has had 77, but also that includes firearm accidents.

Not sure how Philadelphia Police count shootings anymore, but they used to count everything including suicides - which most depts. count separately.

The Philadelphia Police department includes everything. Suicides, Police Shootings, Self Defense Killings, Accidents, Murders, etc.

Is there anything the city of Philadelphia is doing to combat this crime problem? Any new initiatives or anything? Seems like the homicide rate is close to what it was when crack was ravaging the streets. What is driving the violence now in 2012 in Philly?

Yeah that's what how they used to do it, I haven't read one of their reports for a couple of years.
Most cities try to lower the number as much as possible, so usually only "good shootings" are counted.

Nope, "budget problems" the ACLU, & poor micro managing have made most of their operations useless in the long run.
I doubt that will ever change.

Technically, it's not the way they combat crime on the streets, it's the justice system in general....mainly the Courts.

The Courts give minimum sentences to hardcore criminals then they are back out on the streets in 10 years.

What is driving the violence though? For violence to be similar to the 1990s means something is up.

neither has Dekalb, but the poster was referring to 2007 when they had 103, PG county had 123. Pg was a couple short of 200 i think in 2005 or 2006.
