lol - I'm not sure if you've been to Montreal.. I've been to both and on paper both have criteria where one is stronger than the other but Montreal has a vibe and fun factor that is hard to quantify other than to say it is an exciting place! It has to do with the French work to live rather than live to work mentality.... joie de vivre! Plus it is a beautiful city with wonderful architecture. S.F is a great city as well but this isn't S.F against Winnipeg here!
I've been to both. I grew up outside of Montreal. It's a quaint and large city, and I suppose it's "cultured" though SF is as well. But the economy is crap compared to SF and obviously the winters are brutal whereas SF has no winter. Also Montreal is scenic, but SF is on another planet. Montreal is a bigger city...sort of, though SF has to be viewed in the larger context of the Bay Area.
S.F has more natural beauty yes - on another planet umm no.. I think Vancouver is more beautiful than S.F but i'd easily say Montreal is more exciting than Vancouver. I'd also give the nod to S.F as the more exciting over Vancouver - but a Montreal vs S.F matchup... Sorry don't see S.F steamrolling over Montreal not by a long shot.. Also the economy of Montreal is not crap if you work in the right sectors. If you are a high tech innovator and/or I.T professional who wants to become a multi-millionaire than yes S.F and the Bay area is your place.

SF and it's really not close. Not sure how this is even a question and why all these ppl have voted Montreal
Given how nonfactual your post was, not sure you should question the consensus of the poll
''Sf, though it costs money''.
Talk about a powerfully unconvincing statement.
''crime: both are pretty low''
Montreal homicide rate is 1.3 per 100,000 people - San Francisco's is 5.9. Hardly similar.
''McGill is falling apart''
McGill had its best ever showing in the top university rankings for 2012. 18th in the world. Berkeley & UCSF rank below it.
