I disagree......Philadelphia would seem to be easier to cover in a weekend since everything worth seeing is pretty much confined to Center City borders. This makes it much easier for Tourist everything in a neat perimeter.
Except for the neighborhoods in Northwest, Northeast and South Philadelphia, the "Main Line" suburbs, King of Prussia, Valley Forge, Doylestown, New Hope, West Chester, "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" and the South Jersey shore (the latter two being day trips), you're absolutely right.

Those are not what I'm meant by "Tourist-to-See"...Tourist are not going to see Northwest, and Northeast Philly.
if that's the game I'll just go ahead an add
Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, East Liberty, Point Breeze, West End, Bloomfield, Friendship, Highland Park, Aspinwall, Fox Chapel, Oakmont, Ross Twp, Moon, Sewickley, Monroeville, Robinson, Waterfront, Laurel Highlands, Mountaineer, Falling Water, Lake Erie. As Tourist sites from Pittsburgh too.
but the OP was taking the confines of the Cities themselves, not touring the entire Metro areas...

I stand by my statement .
Ummmm, Philadelphia as a city is completely historic. What you are saying is kinda annoying me. Its NOT just Center City to explore. Chestnut hill? German Town? just about the whole city will keep you happy. (North, Southwest = NO). Stop stating that the only fun is in Center City, because your mad Pittsburgh is a medium city and doesnt offer as much as Philly does. Philly has 5 times the city population, and 3 times the metro population. And don't dare say population don't mean a thing. Im not trolling, im speaking facts and stats.

Savvy tourists visit more than just the typical destinations.

More Pittsburghers could stand to travel east of Harrisburg, for that matter.

Thats pretty exclusive to insular Yinzers, a dying breed of Pittsburgh as you put it.....i don't hear Pittsburgh constantly throwing around misconceptions of Philadelphia...I do hear Pittsburghers constantly down the city to everywhere else, but I also hear it from Philadelphians...the 2 cities have more in common than people on here like to admit...
anyway I not only travelled East of Harrisburg, I lived there for for over 15 years now...so Im not talking out my ass...
Pittsburgh offers the same walkable neighborhoods, they just aren't walkable from Downtown, LOL.
Nice pix - assume they are yours. I think you have nailed the difference however, in that a tourist will have to invest time traveling from one part of town to another to take in Pittsburgh's offerings. Philly is easy to traverse by foot to theaters, restaurants, night spots, brew pubs, parks, museums, high end and low end shopping, in addition to Independence National Park, all in a condensed area. I really love the mix of little narrow warrens and stately cobbestoned streets of Center City: Google Maps Google Maps 2100 Delancey Place, Philadelphia, PA - Google Maps
Still Philadelphia's pulse isn't as spread out like Pittsburgh's is....by staying in Center City, you can cover a lot of what Philly Offers....Staying in Downtown Pittsburgh and you'll miss a lot of what Pittsburgh offers.
Yes. That's quite a convenient thing Philadelphia has in its favor. Though, if he's a zoo person, perhaps he'd want to go up to the Northwest. If he likes a Japanese garden, he should check it out in Fairmount Park. But counting the art museum as Center City, he can probably have a good time without leaving.
