I know Montreal and Philadelphia Chinatowns are still smelly as well...

Uggh - easy for you to say you knew you were going to say it - the rest of us didn't and not expecting some rather unpleasant visuals here lol.. I feel marred for life. How can I ever walk through Chinatown in NYC again - ever.

San Francisco and NYC are both among the "undisputed top 4 Chinatowns" hence their exclusion from this poll.

As for Calgary, it seems to be on the same page as at least Honolulu...

I would say LA first. However, Chicago, Philly, and Boston all have impressive Chinatowns, so for places I've been to, I'd choose one of them next.

First we feast had a great article on LA/SGV Chinese food scene.

How L.A. Became A Powerhouse for Chinese Food | First We Feast

As I said earlier, they belong in the first group that is unquestioned.

After NYC/LA/SF/Vancouver/Toronto, all remaining Chinatowns are a notch below...

But is Oakland considered a suburb of SF?

Oakland is not a suburb of SF it's a pretty urban place, essentially a part of the Bay Area's urban heart along with SF. At the same time, it is funny that we're considering Oakland Chinatown as clearly distinct just because it's politically in a different city while we aren't discussing the Clement St. and Sunset Chinatowns just because they're also within SF (not to mention the other Chinese neighborhoods within Toronto and New York). Just goes to show how much our thinking is influenced by arbitrary political boundaries.

How does Oakland stack up to, say, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Chinatown-wise? If they really are on the same page as NYC, SF, LA/SGV, Toronto and Vancouver...
