Alrite to clear up the confusion, the POLL QUESTION Should be as follows:
Will San Francisco Become More Globally Influential Than LA in future Or Will LA Remain More Influential Then SF in future despite SF's growth
There.
People are mistaking a city's name association with 'global influence'--they are not the same thing.
A city can be famous up the wahoo but it doesnt mean anything. Los Angeles is more famous than San Francisco, perhaps, but how does that make it more 'influential'?
The Bay Area's is WAYYY more influential in how people around the world spend their money:
AdWeek 100 Most Valuable Corporate Brands, 2015
This is based on consumer cognition, awareness, knowledge. First off the West Coast as a whole accounts for nearly 1 in 5 of the World's 100 Most Valuable Corporate Brands. That's a huge mark of the region's influence over the world market including 4 of the top 5!! #westcoast
But clearly it's because of the Bay Area's economic juggernaut that the entire region is so highly vaunted in regards to recognizability on the global market:
Bay Area
1 Apple
2 Google
5 Visa
12 Facebook
16 Wells Fargo
39 HP
44 Oracle
56 Intel
67 Cisco
73 ebay
85 LinkedIn
88 PayPal
92 Twitter
Seattle
3 Microsoft
14 Amazon.com
29 Starbucks
97 Costco
It should be LA with 10+ brands in the top 100, but LA only has 1 while the Bay Area has 13 corporate brands among the 100 most valuable and highly regarded on earth.
People think that Baywatch and Kim Kardashian are a big deal? HA! Europe is so jealous of Google theyre trying to break the company up and China is so scared they ban Facebook.
If striking fear into major world leaders' doesnt constitute power I dont know what is.
C-D has some weird facination with downplaying LA. Either they really don't understand the impact and influence LA has or they're just trolling.

Now, beat that LA?
You do make a good argument. Not for sure, but doesn't SF have more brands in the top 100 than NYC too?

While I'm sure they wish they had Google, I think you're kind of leaving out all of the privacy law issues in addition to the antitrust concerns.
As far as the combined haul for companies with $1B in annual profit:
Combined Annual Profit
New York $174.840 Billion San Francisco $169.296 Billion
Dallas $47.109 Billion
Chicago $44.267 Billion
Washington DC $41.865 Billion
Houston $31.443 Billion
Seattle $29.385 Billion
Minneapolis $26.438 Billion
Omaha $25.052 Billion
Atlanta $20.212 Billion
Boston $19.806 Billion Los Angeles $18.556 Billion
Cincinnati $16.378 Billion
Philadelphia $14.669 Billion
Hartford $10.363 Billion
San Diego $8.858 Billion
Detroit $8.286 Billion
San Antonio $7.040 Billion
Charlotte $6.716 Billion
Richmond $6.380 Billion
Indianapolis $6.370 Billion
Pittsburgh $6.286 Billion

Columbus $3.936 Billion
Greensboro $4.386 Billion
Oklahoma City $3.524 Billion
Memphis $3.167 Billion
Nashville $2.940 Billion

This is not sales revenue but pure profit. The Bay Area rakes in 122B more than 3rd place Dallas and was just 5B shy of NYC. That's actually quite stunning.

Houston 11 companies
Minneapolis 11 companies
Washington DC 11 companies
Boston 8 companies

People > corporate headquarters. You're quick to downplay the GaWc ratings as just globally connected firms (when it suits you, of course) yet you overemphasize the presence of corporate headquarters. Corporate HQs, while important, aren't the end all be all of economic influence, and more importantly, overall influence. Otherwise, Bentonville, Arkansas and Omaha, Nebraska are top 10 global cities.
Influence isn't just economic power (though Los Angeles still leads here according to the experts: see academically researched link below). Influence has a lot to due with popularity (hence the obsession on this site over population), demographics, cultural relevance and perception. And I don't see San Francisco over Los Angeles on any of these. Close, but no cigar.
