Escondido. While I prefer Thousand Oaks' proximity to LA and Santa Barbara, it is very sprawling. Escondido has a downtown and convenient transit access to Oceanside and San Diego.

Both cities are about the same size, but Tyler is closer to Dallas.

That's a tough one as they have so much in common! Both quaint and charming mountain communities in the Ojai Valley. Ojai enjoys a higher profile as a tourist destination, which is probably why I would choose Julian.
