Im mean I get that Des Moines homicide rate is extremely bad compared to the past this year, but I think it's hard to compare Des Moines to other cities like Compton and then say Des Moines or whatever city has the same or a higher rate of homicide than another city just based on one year. Because if you compared Des Moines to Compton based on a 5-year trend, I would expect the rates to look far different. And that's the same with any city, you have to compare trends instead of single years in order to get a concrete and accurate comparison.

Compton has also seen a decrease in homicides and crime in general in the past decade or so.

Des Moines is a rough city, it is not uncommon to have high homicides rates.

It is a low-barrier to entry, dirt-cheap city that anyone can afford. Low-barrier to entry cities like Des Moines, Topeka, Tulsa, Indianapolis, Cleveland all have the same major crime issues because anyone can afford to live there. Poor families have no options so they just stay put.

In Compton, Santa Ana and even cities like Denver many poor families have to leave because of the housing costs if they don't own a house. If they own a house they are wealthy just buy having real estate in those cities. Very few landlords want to bother with section 8 either, hence why they are so safe in comparison.

Oakland has a lower homicide rate then Des Moines because it is very expensive and landlords are able to turn up their nose and not accept section 8 vouchers.

Compton is a much higher barrier to entry then Des Moines. Anyone can port a section 8 voucher from Chicago into Des Moines and there are many homes for less then $50,000 in the city of Des Moines for investors to buy and rent out. Compton a tiny house is $500,000 or more.

Anyone can live in Des Moines, the same can't be said in Compton as Compton is very expensive.

Des Moines social issues have been brewing for a very long time with a very high rate of poverty and also a very high percentage being at-risk children growing up poverty households.

The police department is very small for a city it's size also if one looks at the police officer to citizen ratios it is very low.

Behind the nice downtown and very affluent suburbs though is a relatively poor and poverty-ridden city.

Des Moines has a sky-high poverty of 20%, compared to 16% in Omaha, 19% in Kansas City and 11% in San Jose, 13% Seattle

Chicago passes the 300 mark, when it was literally a few bodies below that mark earlier today.

At the pace things are going, the city will have over 600 homicides, but below the abnormality that was 2016(750+ homicides)

What an absolute exaggeration.

Look at the trends LoveCrowds, Compton and Oakland usually have much higher rates of homicide than Des Moines. Topeka, Tulsa, Cleveland and Indianapolis all commonly have much higher homicide rates than Des Moines.

Also, Des Moines doesn't just have a nice downtown, some of the richest areas in the metro are located on the West side of Des Moines, and none of the sides of Des Moines are completely Ghetto.

Talking about Poverty, Des Moines does have a higher than average rate of Poverty but also a lot of the poverty is a bit more spread out around the city than just having it in one little concentration like Omaha's North Side. Also don't act like Des Moines has one of the highest rates of poverty in the nation.

Mapping Poverty in America - The New York Times

You can clearly see Des Moines poverty issues are less than numerous other metros throughout the country. Not trying to say that there aren't any issues, but you are clearly cherry picking data. I mean, I can cherry pick data from 2010 and 2011 when Des Moines had only 5 murders each of those years and say Des Moines is among the top 5 or so safest core cities in the country. Des Moines when looking at the last 5 or 10 years as a trend will show Des Moines has a below-average murder rate comparable to other core-cities in this country.

I'm tired of you trying to make Des Moines look like some city completely filled up with neighborhoods torn to pieces by years of gang violence, it's simply ridiculous.

Also, not specifically to you, stop trying to act like it's caused by all these gangs coming in from Chicago, when the Des Moines police have stated multiple times that's not the primary cause of violence increases this year.

Police chief: Loose-knit gangs behind increase in shootings

Much of the violence has also been caused by domestic disputes.

Omaha has recorded its 13th and 14th homicides this weekend..

The Des Moines situation thus far for 2017, is an absolute exception and anamoly, rather than the rule. For violent crime, It is one of the safest small cities in the United States. History backs that up..

Peace...

Des Moines isn't a dangerous city. it's a shame that 18 homicides have happened but it's not like it is some on going trend. it unlikely that Des Moines will continue this rate year after year.
