Santa Clara County - 1,304 sq miles lol. 2016 population - 1.9 mill. Density - 1,400 people per square mile.
Philadelphia County - 142 sq miles. 2016 population - 1.6 mill. Density - 11,685 people per square mile.

Philadelphia city and county are one in the same. Santa Clara County is almost 10 times larger.

You could also take Montgomery County right next to Philadelphia, which is over 821,000 people, 487 square miles, and a density of 1,700 ppsm.... and Delaware County, which is also next to Philadelphia, has a population of 563,000 in 191 sq miles, for a density of 3,000 ppsm... add them together with Philadelphia, and the population would be over 3 million, in 820 sq miles with a density over 5,400 ppsm.

These two aren't even close.

PS - you cannot include San Francisco. That's San Jose's CSA, not its Metro (MSA). San Jose's MSA is just under 2 million. Philadelphia's MSA is over 6 million.

I'll respond to that other ridiculous nonsense later.

What other nonsense? weather, diversity, industry, shopping, scenery, and or crime?

Ok: San Jose CSA is 8 million and Philly CSA is 7,1 million

It's unfortunate Philly is not in Montgomery County since Philly would cream SJ. San Jose is actually in SC county, so the county pop. is bigger and its area is larger.

Sorry, your city can't take candle to San Jose. I'm not saying San Jose has a better downtown. I really love our downtown: vibrant, thriving, compact, amenity rich, tons of culture with arts and theaters, lots of parks, good amount of housing/offices and hotels, nice people, tons of nightlife with bars/restaurants, lounges, breweries, live music joints, and wine bars and cool new movie/entertainment opening in Dec. Downtown has great transit. It has great old and new architectures and public buildings. It has social gathering spots: San Pedro SQ. Market and SoFA Market, too. This is really a world class city! It even has a brand new world class airport with most modernized facilities.

You're all over the place. Are we comparing just city limits?

Are we comparing metro areas?

Are we comparing CSAs? Which would really be San Fran and San Jose VS Philly.

You can't compre SC County to just Philadelphia city... that's absurd. That's 1300 sq miles vs 142. If you wanna compare SC County then fine, you have to even the playing field for Philadelphia. Include the core counties for the Philadelphia region = Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware and Camden Counties. These 4 combined are just over 1000 sq miles... still smaller than SC County.

If you want to compare these two areas, and have a meaningful discussion, you really need to collect your thoughts here.

As far as metro area is concerned, Philly is the stand-alone big city in the Delaware Valley. San Jose may be the biggest city in the Bay Area but it's overshadowed by San Francisco and even Oakland to a lesser extent.
