If you listed Louisville, I don't see how Hampton Roads and Richmond were omitted.

I voted Nashville. Charlotte is a gateway city between the upper and lower South, Louisville between the upper South and the eastern Midwest.

Birmingham actually.

"The Upland South contains its own sub-regions. The fertile lowlands of the Nashville Basin and the Bluegrass Basin gave rise to the truly urban cities of Nashville, Lexington, and Louisville, which grew into banking and mercantile centers in the 19th century, home to an elite class of Upland Southerners, including bankers, lawyers, educators, and politicians. The abundance of iron ore, coal, and limestone in the Birmingham District transformed a gritty boom town into the iron and steel city of Birmingham which anchored the southern urban industrial powerhouse and gave rise to a class of blue collar workers who were the life blood of the city, as well as a cosmopolitan class of bankers, lawyers, and politicians. Most of the Upland South, however, remained rural in character."

There seems to be a certain segment of CD that perceives NOVA as omitting the rest of Virginia from the south, LOL.

If you spend a lot of time there you would understand. There's a small movement in the rest of VA to get NOVA to secede.

To any regular Joe, Birmingham is the deep south and Nashville isn't.

That's my point. Birmingham actually has Upland South/Deep South Influences and Backgrounds. Charlotte, on the other hand, can't really say the same; so as far it being the Gateway City between the Upland South, and the Deep South, it'll be a reach to say such.

Virginia is the quintessential upper south state. It was calculated to omit it from the poll.

Probably needs two capitals — coastal and inland. Then if you really want to pick nits there is the delta region of western Tennessee, western Kentucky, Arkansas, southern Missouri, and maybe eastern Oklahoma. With the exception of Nashville they probably wouldn’t think of those cities... and Nashville only for the music scene (apologies to Branson).
