Although about 2.5 times smaller population-wise I'd have to give it to Roanoke based primarily on it's amenities/location. It's a beautiful area of the country and can see it developing further as cities like Asheville, Greenville and Chattanooga price out many of those seeking that type of city, and Roanoke provides that outdoorsy aspect at higher elevation in a larger city (which is something of a rarity on the east coast).

I like Roanoke for it's Appalachia views and relaxed vibes. I think it wins all those categories except COL, but both are pretty cheap.

My brother and his family moved to Columbus, GA about a year ago from Richmond, VA.

He seems to like Columbus - he/his family are huge beach people and now they are 3 1/2 hours to Destin/30-A, arguably the best beaches in the country - he greatly prefers the Gulf over the Atlantic/VA beaches

Unfortunately, I don't know very much about Roanoke - I applied for a job there about 2 years ago (ultimately deciding against it) - I was astounded at the inexpensive real estate (I have a small, very old 4-bdrm near DT Greenville - could easily purchase a near mansion there)

One misconception of Roanoke: it's not at a high elevation - it's only 1175 feet (my elevation in Greenville is 1000 feet) - Roanoke gets quite hot in the summer - towns surrounding Roanoke like Blacksburg (elevation 2100 feet, similar to Asheville) are cooler in the summer

Cost of Living - They are probably on par with with each other.

Economy - Columbus, as it has some heavy hitter employers ie Fort Benning, AFLAC and TSYS.

Schools - I'll give this to Columbus, as they have the second highest ranked high school in the state.

Amenities - Columbus has a burgeoning entertainment scene centered on the Chattahoochee River and its whitewater rapids. And, as was mentioned before, some really great beaches are but 3.5 hours away.

Better Future - Columbus has some real momentum going. Not sure if this true for Roanoke.

Love Roanoke's mountain setting, but I'll give this one to Columbus.

Roanoke is better. It's more scenic and it is in a better location.

How is Roanoke in a better location ? Columbus is a short drive to the mountains, beach, and Atlanta.

Yeah that's subjective. Roanoke is in the mountains and it's an easy day trip to the beach and DC. It's all about preference.
