Both cities have been growing and changing a lot recently. Which has a more vibrant and lively urban core? DC or Boston? For purposes, of "urban core" lets define that as within 2-miles of Copley Square for Boston and 2-miles of Thomas Circle for DC.

Hmm..for DC, why did you settle on Thomas Cir.? I would say, a better bet would be either Farragut or McPherson sqs. or even Gallery Place/Chinatown. In any case, between Bos and DC, it's a tough to say. They are pretty evenly matched to an extent. Sometimes one feels larger than the other and vice versa.
Hmm... The old DC debate... Where IS DC's urban core? The entirety of DC could be pretty much classified as an urban core to the whole region. It's very different from Boston, or even Philly, Brooklyn, etc.
But if we are to compare the two areas you specifically singled out, I agree with aquest1.. Hard to say. Pretty evenly matched.
Lived in both, close call. In about 5-10 years, DC could break ahead slightly if it adds another 100k people, but for now it's a tie.
If you like urban walking, both are outstanding with plenty of interesting, connected neighborhoods. Connecticut Ave, P Street, 14th St then down through the Capitol to the Ballpark neighborhood is a DC favorite. Kenmore Sq --> Comm Ave ---> DT ---> North End is a Boston favorite.
Are we including Rosslyn, and Clarendon, and Ballston for DC, or heck even Georgetown?
I guess you could include Georgetown as it falls within 2 miles, rosslyn and ballston fall out of bounds slightly.
