I wouldn’t be surprised if Bangladeshis surpass the 100k mark in time for the 2020 census (city proper and not MSA/CSA).
Right, like for Pakistani Americans in 2010 it was:

Metropolitan Area Pakistani Households
New York City 39,865
Chicago 17,313
Houston 15,206
DC-VA-MD Tri-State Area 11,672
Los Angeles 10,683
Dallas 7,061
San Francisco/San Jose 6,698
Miami-Fort Lauderdale 4,444
Atlanta 3,740

I think it's also extremely lopsided towards NYC for Bangladeshi and Nepal as well. There are also a lot of Indians by way of the Caribbean in NYC who may be counted differently in censuses.

Based on these numbers, we can conclusively say that the top 5 metro areas for South Asians are (in order):

NYC
The Bay Area

DC
Dallas

I dont see a place like LA or Houston in the top five. The numbers dont support it.

Is there enough separation between the Bay Area and Chicago/DC that it is own tier or is it stlll in that tier?

Also I wonder what the linguistic breakdown looks like. I believe for example, Vancouver’s South asians are most Punjabi speaking, while Toronto has more of the Hindi and Urdu mix. I could be wrong but since South India has more tech companies, I think the Bay Area has a more South Indian mix than most other metros.

Yes there is.

DC is Dallas’ peer in this category not the Bay Areas.

Chicago’s South Asian community is much older and would be above Dallas/DC but not enough to get it up to the Bay Area.

And yes Vancouvers South Asian community isn’t diverse at all. It’s ultra Punjabi.

The fact that Jersey City and Los Angeles have the same number of Asian Indians is fascinating give that the latter has over 15 X the population of the former.

Most Indian people in the Chicago area live in the suburbs, not the city. Although there are a bunch of Indians who live both downtown in Chicago and far north around Devon Avenue. To answer your question before, if strictly going by MSA alone, then Chicago has the most after NYC. However, if you go by CSA, then the Bay Area has the 2nd most and then DC+Baltimore or Chicago has 3rd most

Is Chicago’s South Asian community closer to the Bay’s just based on history than it is to DC/Dallas? I think before the explosion of Silicon Valley, Chicago was the definite #2 but now that’s snatched away

What’s interesting about South Asia is that there’s more differences between the different language groups there than there is between countries as a whole. Punjabis can be Indian or Pakistani, and also be Muslim/Hindu/Sikh. There are nearly as many Bengali speakers in India as there is in Bangladesh, Tamils could be Indian or Sri Lankan, etc.

Vancouver though is mostly Sikh Punjabi. NYC does skew more Muslim than non-Muslim, etc.

The interesting part is that the Indian population in Chicago and San Jose are growing at the same super fast rate(20% in five years is stunning), it's just that SF-Oakland's Indian population is actually growing at twice that rate, which is astounding, and will likely surpass Chicago by itself very soon

Asian Indian Population

Chicago MSA
2017 219,618
2013 181,332
5-year growth +38,286
5-year percent change +20.99%

San Francisco MSA
2017 212,619
2013 151,354
5-year growth +61,265
5-year percent change +40.39%

San Jose MSA
2017 184,614
2018 152,863
5-year growth +31,751
5-year percent change +21.05%

As I posted earlier, it's noteworthy that the South Bay is close to 10% Indian, probably the highest of any US Metro Area.
