Of course it means something, just like a city's reputation for being dirty also means something. Perception is reality for better or worse.

Is it fair to say Buffalo is a poor man’s Cleveland?

No, not really. A smaller Cleveland, but not a 'poor man's ' Cleveland. A poor man's Cleveland might be a place like Toledo.

I don't know. Most people consider Chicago skyline and architecture superior. Aren't you being a little too nationalistic?

Chicago is def a a poor mans NYC. NYC is amazing, huge, etc. etc. and I have traveled there over a hundred times throughout decades.

What really amazes me about both cities is how they are by far both America's biggest downtowns, but they both continue to grow!

Hudson Yards 10 years ago and now it Dubai in Hells Kitchen in growth and size. Its amazing.

Chicago south loop, river walk growth in 20 years, beautiful

Yes Chicago cleanliness is important and a fact. I will say since 2020 it is not at its highpoints in some areas like it used to be, but it is by far the cleanest biggest American city.

NYC to me is like New Orleans, I love to visit for 3-4 days and then I want home. I get my fill and the smells, crowded streets run its course.

That said NYC is my absolute fav place to visit for a weekend during spring, fall, and Christmas time. And in Chicago its is just a short 2 hour flight.

I'm not happy with the lunatics attacking random people on the subways and pushing them onto train tracks.

Don't think we can talk to other cities atm about crime without fixing ours first.

I think that Toledo is more of a “poor man’s” Detroit, maybe Erie Pennsylvania for Cleveland.

Do you literally mean a more affordable version of a city or just a similar city?

For the former would it be fair to call Louisville a poor man's Nashville? I would maybe call Memphis a poor man's Nashville but they're too different from one another.

For the latter Florence, AL is a poor man's Memphis. Maybe Cape Girardeau, MO and Paducah, KY along with Tupelo, MS too.
