I never said it was higher (Idk about that) just that it was put in so that James Curley couldn’t extort people via licenses.

I’ve also heard other cities in the state don’t have caps (Cambridge being the main one)

Yea I’m not wrong :
“ It started in 1981, when a state bill was presented that allowed municipalities to opt out of a quota system for on-premise, or "pouring," licenses, which is what the then-City Council decided to do, according to Murati Ferrer. Cambridge was one of just 25 municipalities out of 351 Massachusetts communities (roughly 340 of which allowed on-premise alcohol service at the time) that opted out, according to Ralph Sacramone, executive director, of the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC). Newburyport, North Adams and Worcester were communities that also lifted their quotas.”

All caps were lifted again in July 2016

So for the last 39 years Boston has voluntary kept the cap imposed in 1910?

not all that surprising given how Boston was in 1981. Parochial, stodgy and puritanical.

But to still be honoring a 1910 cap in 2020?

Btown: where did you find 1910 as the year the limits were created?

I gave that date-not sure exactly when but sometime around there-wasn’t meant to be literal.

It’s marketable to middle/white America and to change that would make Boston lose some of its “brand” or uniqueness in the minds of many. Then Boston boosters/actors and Hollywood excel would have to find other ways to be unique and attractive to the masses and compete with other cities. Simple as that.
Yes, even Good Will Hunting was anachronistic when it came out. Southie is yuppie heaven and it’s been that way for more than 20 years.

When The Town came out I would imagine the people of Charlestown were thinking “Bank robbers? In Charlestown!? That happened in the 80’s

I think that thanks to its schools Boston has a lot of new immigrants (of different origins) that keep coming and going, this alone makes it much more cosmopolitan than cities with mostly second/third generation immigrants (no matter their race). Tourists don't make a city cosmopolitan, if that was the case Venice and Cancun would be incredibly cosmopolitan (they are not).
You forgot Harvard Business School.

I'm gonna attempt to encapsulate the diversity of Boston in a few google street view images. Dorchester is Boston's largest neighborhood ~120k people in 6 square miles. In those 6 square miles, the ethnic diversity is huge, its not recent arrivals or flashy, new, sterilized, americanized, restaurant in its approach. These are genuine mom and pop restaurants that represent communities that have all been around for ~40 years or more.
